I am currently reading LOTR out loud to my kids (7-12). I wouldn't let them read it by themselves because i want to be there when they experience it. It's my favorite book. I'll let them read Harry Potter by themselves. Which now that I think about it is a little ironic. And I'll go shameless - here's my list of aphorisms (good quotes) from LOTR:
