Womanist Musings : Men, Sexism and Faux Oppression

I once had a conversation with a guy-- a "guy's guy," you know the type-- who said to me, "You know, it's really great being a guy. I get away with so much." I think most males know this deep down inside, as much as they complain. On the other hand, there are so many reasons why I love being a girl. I can be bad at sports and "male" games like chess, I can be bad at math, and I can cry when I'm upset. Of course, as you said, the reason men can't get away with this stuff is because they are taught to hate all that is "feminine" within them. So yeah, patriarchy hates men, too, but women still get the short end of the stick.

As for what I'm reading, this article is by one of my favorite high school teachers. It's about the contraception coverage controversy. He is a very smart man, left a big impact on me as a student. http://bigthink.com/ideas/42406.

Wow, you're right. The comments on My Perfect Vulva are pretty infuriating. I'm certainly guilty of my fair share of cissexism, but I don't understand the desire to be so utterly mean and nasty, you know? Like how does that make anyone feel good?

Womanist Musings : Comedian Dave Ackerman Dresses in Black Face to Ask BYU Students About Racism and Black History Mont

My Reactions: -Not only is blackface offensive, but that guy did a TERRIBLE job! Did anyone actually think he was black? -Oh my God that "ghetto" accent (I hate using that word but you know that's what he was thinking). -"Malcolm X...he was bad." Ugh. -"That lady on the bus. What was her name?" You should know this! -"There's 50 cents, I don't know!" There's no "s," sweety. -"There was a lot more, I guess you could say, 'colored people.'" No you cannot say that, bro. -The impressions of black people...kill me. -I actually know someone who's black who goes to BYU. Someone posted this video on her wall and said, "How do you deal with this shit?" Her response: "I don't know how I do -__-" I have to say, though, and PLEASE don't think I'm excusing his behavior, but I honestly think this guy was trying to be offensive. He is just terribly misguided. This video might have actually been more effective if he wasn't in blackface, because assuming that the people who he interviewed somehow actually believed he was a black man, they might have been censoring themselves. I just don't know how people haven't gotten the memo that blackface is offensive. Haven't, like, 3000 college frat scandals drilled home the message?

Womanist Musings : Pennsylvania University Puts "Morning After Pill" in Vending Machines

Agreed. Plan B is not a very healthy or good thing to put in your body. Most people would rather use protection than mess with their hormones. Besides, for a lot of people, $25 is no small amount of money-- condoms are still way cheaper. I highly doubt that this is going to make plan B use go up.

Womanist Musings : Did You Know That the U.K. is for White Folk Only?

You're right, it's disgusting that none of the other white people jumped in. I feel so bad for that black guy who looked like he was about to punch the lady with the toddler when she almost said the n-word, but was made to sit down. Well, maybe it wouldn't have come to that if ANYONE else besides the Caribbean lady had to her to STFU. I don't know how people are able to sit through that bullshit. I would lose it.

Womanist Musings : Regarding SnowdropExplodes and Feminists Against Hugo Schwyzer

I second that. I don't always agree with everything I read here, but this blog has taught me a lot and brought my attention to issues I wouldn't otherwise necessarily be exposed to. Before I started visiting this blog, I would say things like, "It doesn't matter if you identify as a feminist or not, because if you believe in feminist values, then you are a feminist." Now I understand why this is wrong.

Womanist Musings : Paula Deen Has Diabetes and the Judgement has Begun

But Paula Deen is not a random stranger. She is a person with considerable influence who has profited off of selling a certain lifestyle. It's not like Ellesar is going up to people on the street and telling them to improve their diets. If you saw someone on TV who had a whole show about the joys of smoking, you would have cause to judge them for promoting an unhealthy habit. I happen to love Paula Deen and her show-- comfort food is my favorite kind of food-- but I don't think it's unreasonable to criticize her for refusing to change her habits (but as it turns out, as I said above, she has gone on record saying she is exercising more).

Actually I read that she started exercising and even dropped a dress size since she was diagnosed. She might be taking drugs, but drugs alone won't work unless you change your habits, and I think she knows that.

Womanist Musings : The Ability To Support Hopes and Dreams

Which, by the way, is not to say that there's anything wrong with going to a community college over Yale. But the fact that prestigious institutions are dominated by rich white people isn't just a matter of "hard work."

I would also point out that access to extra-curricular activities is a huge benefit when applying to college. Piano, science camp, art classes: these are all things that prestigious universities look for in applicants. I've heard a lot of people say stuff like, "If poor kids worked harder in school then they could go to better colleges." If someone's parents can't afford to enroll them in cool art programs, their chances of going to a presitigious university are severely diminished. I wish more people would recognize this fact. I know the point of doing art isn't (and shouldn't be) to get into a good college; obviously your son is drawing and playing the guitar not because he thinks it will get him into Harvard, but because he wants to. I just think it's amazing how all these little things add up.
I'm sure many of you guys have probably seen this video but I just think it's such a prime example of how so many white people think it's their place to police black people's language and then get really upset when they realize they have no idea what they're talking about.

Absolutely. I've always said that being pro-choice means supporting the right of a woman to terminate a pregnancy, never have children, or have 20 children, if she wants to-- and to make that choice on her own terms and in safe conditions. You're not really "pro-choice" if you're not commited to that.

Womanist Musings : Imperialism by another name

"Your duty as an American should have nothing to do with how other countries are running their business. " I don't know how you got that from what I said. I said that it's my duty as an American to oppose things my government does that cause destruction in other countries. I think that's a pretty fair statement. Should I NOT care about what my government does? As for everything else: We're obviously not going to see eye to eye on this. Because I'm American, I'm coming at it from a certain (privileged) perspective, which I acknowledge. I hope I haven't given the impression that I am making excuses for the United States' bad actions. Your post was interesting, I learned from it, I just don't agree with everything. Maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong.
