Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Katz, leadership

Umm... no. Not one of the Ducks QB's would start for the Beavs in a year with poor depth. I think the same might be said of the Beavs QB's in the Ducks system, though I think Kelly's offense is a lot more adaptive to the signal caller than is Riley's offense.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Being an O-lineman

NCAA rules prohibit a school from discussing a NLI signee more than once between his/her signing and enrollment. So many coaches hold off on the discussion if they expect more NLI's because they want to comment on the class as a whole. Other coaches wait until after the signing period to make any comments about signees as a matter of policy. Daniel Gomis did sign yesterday. http://twitter.com/OHACoachSmith/status/270963796...

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Pac-10 power poll

All in all, it was a pathetic game on both sides. If that's UCLA 'wanting it more', then I don't think anyone really wanted anything... except maybe to be somewhere other than on the field.

I'm not saying we played well enough to win. I'm not even saying that the call on Remmers mattered in the long run. I was speaking directly to player safety and the lack of it from the referees. Quizz' hat came off because UCLA's #8 used the crown of his helmet to hit Quizz under the chin while Quizz was vulnerable. This was a clear call to be made according to the rules for safety in our league. And if the refs are not going to call it, then the league should just announce that they don't really care. As I said, there was an instance which wasn't as clear late in the game where one of our linemen hit Brehaut helmet to helmet after he threw the ball. I think this one should have been called as well. Safety is the topic of my questions. Late chips can be included. Many times UCLA linemen were hitting our defenders well after the whistle and they were not called. If they weren't called for those hits but our guys were just because UCLA's guys 'wanted it more', then the refs can just tell us that's why they called the game that way. I don't think this was the case.

Another inconsistency was Remmers' late hit late in the game which cost us possession (eventually). UCLA O-linemen were chipping off the pile late all game long--in some cases later than Remmers' push. Why call it correctly when they had been ignoring it for the bulk of the game?

Cliff, I would like some clarification on the helmet to helmet hit on Quizz. One of the announcers tried to explain it away because he went up in the air and, "... you don't know where he's going to come down." ? That goes against common sense. You know precisely where he's going to come down since he's given up the ability to change direction. Using that logic, the NFL should have done nothing when Todd Heap was popped under the chin earlier this year by Merriwether. I think Frahm (?) should have been called on one later in the game as well, so it's not as iff I think we're angels who are being picked on. i just think the league officials are saying they take safety seriously and act in an opposite manner. The plays that were called on this rule almost seemed they would not have been called if the first was not embarrassingly missed. I'm sure the refs caught an earful after Quizz' hit.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Kicking issues, OL depth

I generally yawn at the self-righteous ditribes provided by some, but this back and forth is about a kicker with the yips. If you're down on him, then you're standing in a long line which includes teammates, coaches and mostly himself. His reality is more harsh than a comment on a blog. If you think your self-righteous diatribes ward off some evil joo-joos or give other whackos a sense of warm fuzziness, then so be it. But most of us live in a world where not everyone gets a trophy for showing up for some game where they don't keep score because *sniff* it hurts to lose. In the end we're still just talking about a kicker with the yips.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Cal fallout

And if I hear one more Autzen crowd boo after one of their linemen clips some defenseless d-lineman 30 yards behind the play then I'll just have to make a video montage of their o-line's dirty play resulting in these not fake injuries. Or maybe we can petition the state to take our alum's name off their stadium?

Give up 500 yards without allowing them to score? Who are they... the Kragthorpe Beavs? If you give up that much yardage, you are giving up a minimum of 21 points. And that's with take-aways. Since that is obvious to any reasonable football fan, why would not alowing a team to score logically follow giving up that kind of yardage? I think he meant that we can hold the opposition to under 30, and we have a good to great chance to win due to our offense... sort of like UO giving up gobs of yards and points but still winning.

Recruiting in LA has little to do with whether or not a kid can go home to play once a year. If it did, Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska--start naming teams--would never get anyone from LA.

I look forward to seeing Romaine on the field next year. Automatic touchbacks and PAT's are a good thing. Still, I wonder how much a K needs to be reminded that he's missed a kick. Maybe if we just leave him alone he sorts it out on his own. He just needs to go out and play. Stop thinking about it... just kick it. Is it bad that Hekker's best punt was a short line drive that bounced harmlessly for a 45 yard kick?

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Arizona postgame (updated)

I see the play that hurt Rodgers the same as Riley does. It looks like the defender was trying to knock the ball loose on the goal line then got tangled with James. I see a lot of tackles like this, and the only reason this one was terrible was because someone was hurt. Does anyone know the rule for illegal man downfield? The replay showed Bishop was only three yards downfield when the pass was thrown. Is it the line of scrimmage? Or is it five yards downfield? The way our season has played out thus far, I think we will start catching some breaks we shouldn't... a make-up if you will. When the wolf finally appears, it will be good to have a coach who has remained silent thus far. The world will sit up and take notice the first (and presumably only) time Riley runs out on the field to scream at a ref. The next time Stoops does it, we'll know that UA's next game has begun.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Arizona postgame (updated)

While I disagree that he should have remained silent against the Boise Thugs (and I'm told he wasn't... though the cameras never showed differently), the plays we've seen since don't really warrant any great outburst from Riley. When I see Stoops doing some jawing at the refs 20 yards away from the sideline (on every play), I see the boy who cried wolf. More egregious is the replay official's calls to overturn everything on the field except the one play that had overwhelming evidence to overturn. I've heard that Jim Fogletance was the replay official for our game. If that rumor is indeed true, then UA's AD should be sanctioned by the league office. Jay Stricherz is just a bad official who micromanages games so as to affect the outcome. Jim Fogletance is a demonstrated UA homer as an official who was bounced from the league for his actions. If I was told he was the replay official before the game, I could have predicted each and every call with 100% certainty.

Cliff Kirkpatrick : Cliff: Recruiting, notes

It's actually not the RB's who need the speed on a power sweep. It's the OG's. But we don't trap or pull in our running game. Like Cliff said, we're a zone blocking scheme. Those aren't actually draws that you're seeing. Those arecalled stretches because the QB is stretching for the hand-off while the RB is moving toward whatever hole he sees. The power sweep can go with a toss, because the RB isn't reading the hole... he's looking for the ball first. I should say that we do have some draws built in. So you are seeing some. But those are only after the QB looks the safeties off the run.
