My Friend Amy : Random Sunday Chatting!

I really like your analysis of the qualifiers and how maybe there is just so much now that it feels even more difficult to jump back in when it comes to blogging.

My Friend Amy : HI EVERYONE

Hello Amy :-) I feel completely disconnected (which is all my fault), and I cannot seem to find a way to get back to blogging. Reading and books just have not been my top priority lately, but I also hte giving up on Iris on Books because it gave me such joy for years. Anyway, I also notice that there is lots of talk about comics when I am online. Like you, I haven't found a way to make them more accesible to me.

My Friend Amy : War and Peace Mini Series Update!

I'm sure we won't have access to it over here at the same time as you will, otherwise I'd vote to co-watch. And yes, I am definitely fussy on the details already, sometimes I feel as if I might just as well not have read the book...

My Friend Amy : Happy 2015!

Happy new year, Amy! I love the idea of a quarterly book club with your sister. Will you be sharing which books you plan to read so we might join in if we feel like it? I was thinking of our War and Peace readalong the past few days.. Your not accidentally thinking of reading another long book this year, are you? I might want a challenge... (though with my track record the past year I'm not sure I'm a reliable person to make plans with anymore :/)

http://greenmushroom1up.blogspot.ca/ : My Year in NonFiction

I can relate so much to your comment about wanting to read to disconnect when you get back from scientific work. Although somehow, when I do read nonfiction (or fiction) it somehow often still relates to my research (but perhaps that is more easily the case when its history instead of labwork). Perhaps I should challenge myself to actually read something in a different field of science someday?

My Friend Amy : Hi Everyone!!

I did not manage to watch the ladies figure skating, but given your anger I am curious if you watched the men's? I only caught (I think) the latter half of it, but was quite surprised to see some of the scores there too, as was the Dutch commenter though he did not voice it as such. There were so many skaters who fell during their skating, and then some of the deductions seemed a little weird if you compared the falls from one skater to the other? Anyway, I have very little knowledge about figure skating, but it just stood out to me before I accepted that I probably know nothing so I had best not worry about it.

I copied your questions and answered them in a post that will go up tomorrow. I am so sorry for not doing so sooner. And thanks for the questions! That definitely helped writing about finishing the book. I don't think I would have been able to make sense of my blur of thoughts without them.

My Friend Amy : War & Peace, 1956 in Pictures

Well, I am glad you watched it so I don't have to anymore :P In a way it makes sense to introduce Pierre as a well-known friend to Natasha because it makes the love story work better, perhaps? I am still not sure if the book convinced me that Pierre should be with Natasha, so in a movie that followed the book that might be even more difficult to convey (even if it was 6 hours!) That is - going with the idea that most movies will choose a love story as the central plot because it is somehow expected? I don't know.. Hah, about Pierre being too old! I somehow always imagined him as older while reading the book and had to keep reminding myself that he was actually the young person from the beginning :)

My Friend Amy : The End of the Year is Coming and I Have Thoughts

I think I still need to come to terms with the fact that I just can't be the blogger I was 2 years ago anymore. I'm still struggling though (which I think makes me even less productive somehow?) Anyway, hopefully that will be resolved in 2014 :) You are such a thoughtful person. I really liked this post <3 And yay, we have both finished War & Peace!

My Friend Amy : Virtual Advent Day 2--Christmas TV Movies

I do not think we get particular movies produced for Christmas TV over here, but I do have particular movies I enjoy to watch. That is, either the whole Harry Potter series, or movies like Love Actually or The Holiday. I enjoyed the latter because it has a character called Iris and her solution to everything is serving people tea.

My Friend Amy : War and Peace Check-In: November

Yes, I AM. As to the epilogues, I think Bookworm below is right: the first one gives us some more detail about the families, the second one is a lot of philosophy from Tolstoy. (I might have skimmed that a little as I just couldn't concentrate).

How I disliked his statement about real women. Ugh. I think I actually read it to my boyfriend (who is not at all interested in Tolstoy) just because I had to share my frustrations with someone. But yay, we're almost done!

My Friend Amy : War and Peace Check-In: October

This post is so observant and clever! I couldn't agree more with everything you said! I did feel sorry for Sonya though. Actually, I think the girls (as in Marya, Sonya, and Natasha) are possibly the only characters that have truly truly captured my heart. But it might be because I try to compensate for Tolstoy's treatment of them from time to time.

My Friend Amy : War and Peace Check-In: August

"I really liked Andrei raging against the idea of a gentleman's war, and proclaiming how awful it is that war confers honor on leaders, when it is actually savage and brutal and unpredictable and awful." I cannot help but really like Andrei. While his rage translates into rage at some point, and I was saddened by that, I find it very difficult not to feel sympathetic towards him.

My Friend Amy : Are you willing to pay for illustrations?

I often find it difficult to pay that much money for graphic novels (it is why I go through Fables so slowly because I have to hope the library gets in copies). The only graphic novel I have wanted to pay full-price for up to now is "Dotter of her Father's Eyes" which I really enjoyed. On the other hand, I wish I would be easier with buying books with illustrations because they are often so pretty and I'd like to have wonderful editions of my favourite books. I do find the idea of Patrick Ness' book without illustrations weird though. I think the illustrations are very much part of what make the book work for me.

: How Polare, a Dutch Bookstore, Crushed the Dreams of Many Neil Gaiman Fans

I was caught unawares by their tweet yesterday too. I saw that the Rotterdam store required reservations, but that Utrecht didn't. Sad! Particularly as Gaiman has announced that he will not be doing any signings after this tour, at least in the US.
