Nobody is stupid enough to work for a bunch of sissies who say... So are you suggesting that the entire military, starting with the Marines, is now going to mutiny en masse? Or worse, that those who don't are idiots? I think maybe you should go watch A Few Good Men again. We have a standing army, despite two oceans and Constitutional barriers, because a militia is not good enough any longer. But we also still have a free and open society (Let us not quibble about just how free), and that means that not everyone agrees about everything. I detest what Westboro is doing to those families. I am also a pacifist, one who got cussed out at a college program by Hugh Thompson (My Lai) for being a hippie coward, even though I was born in '67. I will be the first person to tell a soldier who asks, that as a Christian being a soldier is wrong. but I also recognize the sacrifices and the dedication of those who do serve. You are being selfish, and just as judgmental as Westboro, for arguing that those of us who agree with this ruling are accessories to treason. You are also ignoring those people, including me, who stand to honor those who have gone forth for their flag and country. Unfortunately there is nothing I can do or say about the inhuman abuses you suffered as a very young man when you came home. Please understand that even if this issue is black and white, the lines may be harder still to find properly.

No, William, rights are NOT based on mutual respect, they inhere in each one of us because God has given them to each one of us. This decision is the correct one because the culture that left us the governing concept behind the 1st Amendment understood what Jesus meant when he told his disciples that they would be reviled for telling the truth, and that they must still go forth and suffer the indignities thrown at them. Westboro Baptist is hated by both believers and infidels, for different reasons. That alone is not enough for us to judge how far out of God's will they may be. It is the secularization of our culture that makes such society as you are depicting more and more impossible.

What disturbs me most about this whole story is the attempted comparisons with the demonstrations in the current Middle East. http://www.philly.com/philly/news/116584773.html Just so you're all aware, this was the cover story. But just so I get this straight; well-paid government workers in one single state are the spiritual/political equals of millions of paupers protesting a 30-year old totalitarian regime. The people who have taken to the streets of Madison, risking their (What is it they ARE risking?), are just as oppressed as those Egyptians who have risked the wrath of the Egyptian military (Notice also the median income in Wisconsin and the teacher salaries). Clearly the elected leaders of Wisconsin are identical in motive and lack of legal/moral justification for their intended policies. Why did no one request the UN observe the elections in November? And just as clearly, the mobs in Wisconsin are killing police, looting the local libraries, and raping or assaulting reporters. The comparisons do actually cut both ways. Can anyone explain to me just how Tunisia/Bahrain is meant to model political dissent for us here in the US? And what possible parallels hold?

Look, if you wish to go interview/interrogate Lara to find out just how "intimate" her friends got with her, fine. Otherwise, just shut up. It is this sort of parsing that demonstrates the moral bankruptcy of The Left and a great many counter-cultural activists. A mob of 200 men assaulted her party, and it took a smaller mob of unarmed women, and 20 soldiers, to rescue her. Do we really need to go here? As Dr Chesler continues to remind us, countless women and girls throughout these lands are subjected to this sort of brutal inhumanity daily. Lara is one single Westerner who was physically and sexually assaulted in public doing her job. And not one single professional compatriot of hers has risen to her defense. Nor have the raging feminists who crucify those who commit far lesser crimes here in the West.

Thanks, Joe. Amused a little by Khameni's slips; "tip the balance of arrogance in this region in the favor of Islam"---Somehow I don't think this means he actually believes that Islam is arrogant. But I suspect deep down me may realize it. "If these leaders are replaced by others from behind the scenes, then nothing has changed"--Isn't this the MO of the 12th imam? It is fascinating how well they understand "machine politics", while at the same time we Americans have been teaching ourselves in high school that the machines are long dead. I guess hiding in plain sight does work after all. It frustrates me no end, which forces me to slow down and breathe deeply, discussing these things with people who truly believe the snake oil talk. -Kevin
