FaithFreedom.org : Should Islam Be Classified as a Religion?

Here's the problem with the polygamy argument. Islam does not require anyone to practice polygamy. In fact, it limits the number of wives to 4. The Bible, on the other hand, makes no limitation, and, in fact, sets rules for polygamous marriage in several places. Because a Muslim must have "4 or fewer" wives, American Muslims can practice monogamy and be fully within the rules of Islam, since 1 is clearly fewer than 4. This is basic math, guys.

Commentary Magazine : Would Bloomberg Mock Islam Like That?

One substantial piece of information? How about "America's chickens are coming home to roost", a statement made during a Fox News interview, and continually repeated on air by that network and others. Hannity, of course devoted months of airtime to the reverend and his church, painting candidate (and then President) Obama with the selfsame brush, implying that everyone in the pews must be in lockstep with their pastor and church on every issue.

I must say I have no problem critiquing or even mocking Mormon doctrine, though I do wish the media would grow a pair and stop letting other religions (like Islam) off the hook. On the other hand, I don't think Mormonism has gotten nearly the scrutiny that Jeremiah Wright got in the 2008 election cycle.

Big Government : Libertarians Have One Choice In 2012-Vote Republican

The economy recovered quite nicely by 2002, which Bush promptly took credit for. That didn't stop the deficit from ballooning due to the wars, the cost of which we were told could never even reach 100 billion (it's at $3 trillion and counting, now). This is the problem with me being told I can trust either party. Neither side is willing to take *any* responsibility for the state of things.

It's not that they hate or love Israel. It's that they don't think we should be involved with another country's affairs. They want to cut Palestinian aid as much as Israel's. If you want to court the libertarian vote, you should find out what they *actually* believe.

Goo, I agree that Obama likes the Patriot Act...so did Clinton. I argued until I was blue in the face to my republican friends that their support of the Patriot Act meant that they were going to hand unprecedented power not only to Bush, but to every president that follows, including democrats. They just blew me off, but now they aren't laughing. My issue isn't with the position that dems are anti-libertarian. It's with the laughable claim that republicans are somehow pro-libertarian. That ended when the neo-cons (frustrated liberals from the 1970s) took over the hive mind. I don't trust any republican to shrink government, except Ron Paul and Buddy Roemer, who have agreed that any anti-government push must also be anti-corporate.

Goo, I didn't expect you to support the libertarian position on all of those things. I merely was pointing out that republicans are not libertarian at all. You have just agreed with me by opposing every libertarian position listed in you response. I understand that you value safety over freedom. I do not. However, in answer to your question: I want us to have to prove that someone is a terrorist before we punish them. Even the Bush administration *admitted* that hundreds of Gitmo detainees were cases of mistaken identity, captured in the fog of war. Some of them were released by Bush, after years of illegal incarceration, many others are still there. Why? Because we don't know whether they are terrorists or not, and we don't want to take the risk. Obama is playing the same game. It's a wash as far as that is concerned.

I'm not defending the president. He showed lack of character in caving to the republicans on those issues. Clearly, he takes no principled stands to against the wars or civil liberties. My point is that he sold those issue out to the republicans to avoid criticism. It makes him a coward, yes...but who was he selling out to? The republicans, of course. You can't say with a straight face that republicans would have applauded the closing of Gitmo, the ending of wiretapping, or a pull-out from Afghanistan. If republicans get in, none of that changes. You tell me: What party is going to end the wars? What party is going to end warrantless wiretapping? What party is going to close Gitmo and give trials to any who are accused? I'm not saying you have to agree with those things. I'm saying, if you want libertarians to vote your way, you're going to have to do more than point out Obama's failures on those issues. You'll have to show me how republicans are any better (on THOSE issues, since they were the ones brought up the blog).

We did vote in more conservatives, remember? We had a republican president, senate and house. Shortly after, we went from a budget surplus to the biggest deficit in history, 2 needless wars, the Patriot Act, torture, and Gitmo. I'm with you on the taxes, the size of government and the debt, but it takes two to tango, and we need to at least open our eyes and see that neither party did what was right when it was their turn.

Libertarians aren't big on compromise, unless they get a lot out of it. When republicans want to admit that the Patriot Act, the wars, Gitmo, and the practice of torture were bad ideas (and swear never to repeat them), then you can make this claim. Libertarians also want equal rights for gays and lesbians, and the legalization of marijuana (for starters). Yes, Obama is a big government guy, but the compromises you cite (expanding Afghanistan, wiretapping, etc.) were due to pressure from republicans. You don't think we know that? You don't think we remember that the stimulus spending was supported by Bush and however many republicans it took to get the bill passed (so that the rest of them could cover their asses by voting against it)? Finally, you must also remember that libertarians are just as anti-corporate as anti-government. We don't want our liberties taken by the Exxon any more than by the IRS. If the Republicans think shilling for corporate governance (whether it's Merck or any other big donor) will win libertarian support, they have another thing coming. As another commenter said, I'll be voting republican, but it'll be in the primaries, for Ron Paul (or possibly Buddy Roemer). The libertarian party needs a 5% showing in the general election to receive federal matching funds. I'll be helping out with that goal, as will the libertarian groups in my area.

Big Journalism : Michele Bachman Gives Chris Matthews a History Lesson

"I don’t believe Bachmann said anything about 'in their lifetime.'" What she said was that the founding fathers "worked tirelessly until slavery was no more in the United States." For Bachmann's statement to be accurate, the founding fathers would had to have worked tirelessly until 1863 (the date of the emancipation proclamation). Even John Quincy Adams (who, btw, was *not* a founding father) didn't live to see that day. Representative Bachmann could have said that *some* of the founding fathers (Jefferson, most notably) wanted the founding documents to go further in terms of such equality. Certainly I think a scholar like Newt Gingrich (an excellent history professor) would never have made that mistake, now would he have made the claim that 18th century arrivals in America were not judged on their race or religion. Can't we be represented by people who won't paint the whole movement as anti-intellectual and uneducated?
