iainlbc : Tutorial: How to setup a Dedicated Left 4 Dead 2 (L4d2) server on Linux (CentOS 5.6)

The whole premise of this blog, and indeed my life, is to become a better sysadmin. Using control panels and taking the easy route will teach you nothing in terms of server administration or how (game) servers actually function. It's sort of the equivalent of installing a GUI interface on a server; A GUI just makes it easier to do things, at the cost of not knowing how to fix things when they break because you are so separated from what's actually happening underneath the GUI. That said, I appreciate the comment and some readers may find it useful :) Cheers

Hi Dave, Sorry to hear that...Your regex is correct. Can you try creating a sort of control group to narrow down the issue? You could try create a new page "test" then try doing a redirect of /test to another page just to make sure the plugin and underlying mod_rewrite is working. You could also try doing the full url of the site (http://yoursite.com/comment-subscriptions?srp=(.*)&sra=s) ? Are you certain apache mod_rewrite is enabled on your host? Do you have control of the apache config/vhost? Cheers!

So glad this helped you out, I thought I might have been the only one who found atlassians docs cumbersome :) Thanks for taking the time to comment I very much appreciate it. I can't seem to comment on your blog-- it is asking for a login. Do i need to register? Some of your posts seem quite relevant to my interests, like the business book recommendations :) Cheers!

Hi Martin,  Not sure whats going down here. Anything strange showing up in /var/log/nginx or the php logs?  If you are seeing any PHP at all then nginx and php-fpm are doing their parts. Are you using any rewrites beyond what's in the tutorial? Have you checked all the paths are correct each part of the vhost?  Try commenting out this part of the /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/yourvhost.conf file like this:  # if (!-e \\$request_filename) {  #          rewrite ^(.+)$ /index.php?error=404 last;  #         }

Hi Ronak, What version are you installing? A few people seem to have this error: http://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRA-19052 Are you able to login, or do all gadgets show the error? It would really help to see the startup logs: - Stop Jira: /opt/jira/bin/./shutdown.sh - Start Jira: /opt/jira/bin/./startup.sh - Then Transfer /opt/jira/logs/catalina.out via FileZilla or SFTP, and email it to me at iainwrig@gmail.com. You could also paste it here and provide the link: http://paste2.org/new-paste All the best, iain

Digital Trends : ABC, NBC and CBS block Google TV

"If anything, Google is collecting user data which they use to generate a profit, but using others content to get people to buy their product. " Exactly--the major networks want people to continue to watch TV during prime-time hours, which is simply not conducive of today's lifestyle for many. On the other side... the networks are in constant battle against piracy. They are likely taking advantage of this situation to request that Google makes some kind of effort to block sites that have pirated versions of their content. Which I can't really fault them for...

Digital Trends : ABC, NBC and CBS block Google TV

"Google TV isn’t stripping the video off the sites. It’s not inserting its own ads into the content. It’s not knocking down firewalls, eating small children nor sacrificing animals. It’s simply letting you use a web browser, exactly as you’d use a web browser on a Windows or Mac computer." <a href="http://-http://searchengineland.com/tour-networks-blocked-google-tv-53606" target="_blank">-http://searchengineland.com/tour-networks-blocked-google-tv-53606 "It would be the equivalent of someone setting up a lemonade stand on my driveway without my permission because my house draws eyeballs, and then asking me if I want a cut of the profits later. Umm hello, get the hell off my drive way. " Using this logic, all search engines are held equally at fault for providing bits of other peoples content alongside their for-profit AD's without getting permission of the ~1 trillion website owners.

Hi OIaf, It should be within the JIRA HOME/atlassian-jira/WEB-INF/classes/ or if you installed using this tutorial, simply nano /opt/jira/atlassian-jira/WEB-INF/classes/jira-application.properties The find utility is pretty handy if you really are having trouble finding something: sudo find / -name "jira-application.properties" Cheers, iain

Honestly I just followed the requirements on the MT documentation that states Perl & ActivePerl are requirements to running Movable Type. I wonder if a Perl PHP Extension would suffice? You are right in that having both definitely exposes us to more threats. I actually need to restructure this a bit because PHP is only necessary if you want to do Dynamic Publishing within MT.
