It's not "bending over backwards" to point out he has obeyed his bishop; it is rather to show there is something in his favor. if he were completely a lone rogue, he wouldn't do that. Even if it is to be expected, it is also good he does what is expected of him -- especially in today's day and age. It's always good to show 1) a good action and 2) point out it is good. It also shows, if there is any real concerns, those concerns could be worked out. Those who are unable to follow obedience will be more difficult to deal with those concerns. Those who follow it show a character which is worthy of recognition. Just as it is good to point out someone who is a virgin outside of marriage -- just because it is expected doesn't mean it isn't praiseworthy.

If he did it in quiet, would people say "what's this, something underhanded, if they wanted us to believe this is in the up and up, wouldn't they have been public with why they are having Fr. Pavone recalled?" What I have said elsewhere I think is right: I am sure there is good in Fr Pavone’s work — he is a priest, he is actually being obedient (as far as I can tell) — a good sign; I do think he is sometimes too closed in his vision because of abortion. I have no problem with people being focused on abortion, just as others are focused on social justice, etc. I do think he needs to make it clear that they go together and all. And I do think he does too much which seems like GOP-strategy than anything else. Of course, I know priests who seem the reverse. But I do think there is good here if he is willing to obey his bishop. Maybe this will help correct any possible temptations he might have had and make him better and more universal by the end of all this?

Sherry I would highly recommend the works of Fr. Taft; he is one of the greats today when dealing with liturgical theology. Orthodox and Catholic alike respect him (well, many Latin-trads don't, but they are a small group).

Yes, I have brought Fr. Taft and Nicea into the discussion before. Indeed, Taft in his lectures tells of interesting things about communion and St Macrina which I think are best left to people who can take it (often not people looking for fights). The simple fact is as you describe -- it was later, even in the East, when the spoon was developed as a way to change how communion is given.

Gene Wolfe actually wrote to Tolkien on the question of wargs (Wolfe likes to use wolf themes throughout his writings). Tolkien even read one of Wolfe's stories -- we know this because he talks about reading an author using wargs because of the Lord of the Rings; that author WAS Gene Wolfe.
