elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Remembering 9/11 by Not Forgetting 9/12.

It's odd that the common denominator in our equalization is sorrow. That sameness doesn't happen when folks come together to celebrate joyous occasions. Is it about survival wired into out DNA? Is it mostly instinct or is it love? Is love a protective shield that reflects one way during tragedy and deflects in another way during happy times? What funny creatures we are. I am glad you've brought out the best of us here. It is a beautiful thing to behold.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : A Tantrik Message: Sound Creates the Body. ~ Eric Shaw

I don't understand this but I totally get it. I know that sounds contradictory but it's because I get it in my unreasoning brain. Sound was the impetus for movement that lead me to a physical expression of yoga and continues to feed the practice. There is no denying it.

Simply beautiful. This is a sweeping vision of humanity apart and apalled by itself and its sensuality and also enraptured, entrenched and delivered by it.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Does Yoga Kill? ~ Timothy McCall

I suspect that Broad's findings do not have much effect on the general public's appreciation or interest in yoga. Most folks will have heard more about a friend benefitting from a practice than will be aware of his work. However, it is to Dr. McCall's and his colleagues credit that they douse man made fires before they burn the forest.

Excellent work. It needs to be written and shouted and heeded. It's a bigger issue than corrupt and ignorant doctors but the story of people who can't stand their lives in what is supposed to be the most privilged nation in the world.

This is a spectacular post. I am revelling in the joy you project, enamored by the beauty of nature in the form of your cadaver, at the wonder of seeing yourself, ourselves, as a miracle evidenced by the secrets revealed in her body Thank you for your thorough recant of your experience that most of us will not have except through your words. I particularly love your evidence of the dance of fibers. And your teacher's lesson to let the cadaver inform the anatomy books. Excellent.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Accepting How We Are: An Interview with Cyndi Lee.

What an interesting interview. The author is a practicing yogini and Buddhist and yet she wrestles with self loathing and she is not alone by a long shot. This says something about the limitations of the practices as panacea's and it says much about our culture. I had a male student in class today who said that the most liberating and healing thing he has ever done (he is a long time musician and yoga practitioner) is model for art classes. He is in his fifty's. He said that to remain absolutely still and naked forces you to your 'center'. He said it's the most honest thing he's ever done. And whatever the body reveals becomes suddenly alright; every flaw is no longer a flaw but sacred as all of him that they are taking in. I noted that women may not be as comfortable with their perceived flaws and pointed out how many high profile teachers and not high profile teachers have had cosmetic work done. There is nothing wrong with doing whatever one needs to do to feel beautiful but it would be nice if being beautiful didn't carry so much weight. I applaud Cyndi Lee for wrestling with this publicly. It can only help a sister out. :)

I have never been to India. Thank you for the sensual journey, the shared experience. Darshan is a beautiful exchange. I understand the resonance of your own religious ritual making this path more obvious. I must say it's the vision of cows eating garbage that leaves me more than a bit sad and this is the mystery of India. The sad apparently does not destroy the happy.Fascinating.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : A Yoga Sutras Makeover.

I agree with Bob, this is poetic commentary and does the author proud, I'm sure. Though I haven't yet read the book I am familiar with Matt's poetry and if it runs through his book, that alone is enough. I think a modern commentary that is juicier than dry is a treat and especially so here when the author tackles a tome that is considered sacred by so many.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Don't Like Crazy? Find a New Planet.

Yes I am aware of the discussion. Thank you for adding to the talk. Sometimes we say that this is just the way it is. And sometimes we say, we will change the way it is because it could be better. I don't use a gun to kill my food and I could not imagine pulling a trigger to kill a foe but I do realize that is not the case with everyone. I understand keeping a rifle to shoot a rabid skunk or scare away an intruder or hunt for dinner but the rest of it eludes me. It doesn't matter how many people think more guns are the answer, I may be a dreamer but the world I'm dreaming up is not armed. However, this tongue in cheek post was pointing out that determining who is crazy and not is the real topic. And if we cannot tell who is trustworthy when angry or confused with a weapon in their hand we might do well to ask for measures that protect us from ourselves.

Judgemental, yes. I have strong opinions. I love the way eccentricity manifests in the South. It's the stuff of Southern writers and while much of the country has become homogenized, the South still has a strong flavor which I greatly appreciate. This post took a strong stance on our relationship to guns and the discussion of insanity. I posted it now to make the point that we are no further in clarifying our position on guns or on what constitutes insanity then we were five years ago.
