I love this. Blogging is filled with moms who appear to nothing but wear yoga pants, drink whine, and avoid housework. My heart tells me that these talented writers aren't really that way all the time, even if it is funny to write about. The truth is that when we compete with each other on who can be the biggest hot mess out there, we're still competing.

I struggle with the exact same thing. Ugh! I've been tempted lately to announce "I'm thirsty!" and see what they do. (they'd probably say "me too")

I think this is one where my husband can really help. He can gently remind the boys that this is NOT how we treat mom… and demonstrate clearly what is appropriate. My husband doesn't bark "I'm thirsty" so why should my kids?

i think one important factor is to celebrate my child's passions. i try to find easy ways to encourage them each to explore what they are passionate about (at the moment).

but ultimately, just showing up and being present (aka not staring blankly at the phone) with my child goes a long way!

that's one of my favorite verses. it's the heart of a book (and retreat) called chazown - focused on helping us find our passion and our unique calling from God. it's a worthwhile read with online support for the thinking parts.
