I work for a Christian nonprofit that distributes emergency financial assistance to those in need in our service area. We are a coalition of over 30 churches and have been in existence for 40 years. While the scenario you describe can happen, most organizations that take the business of helping those in need seriously do not proselytize. The mere act of offering assistance is enough. Yes, you will see crosses, and pictures of Jesus on the wall, and Bibles on the shelves, but that is it. No praying, no Bible verses, no holding hands to get the services you need. We also do not take any Government monies to fund our operation. We pump over half a million dollars back into the economy each year by operating a thrift shop. We have customers and clients from all walks of life. Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, and yes, Atheist customers and clients. We do not ask your religious 'status', so how do I know we help Atheist without prejudice? I have sent a few Atheist their way. I do understand your post was a generalization, but there are always shinning examples of how it can work to benefit those in need, without making them feel less than what they are. Which is a Human Being in Need, first and foremost.

Oh, BTW, I am not some Christian troll. I manage their Thrift Shop, and I am an homosexual Humanist, and they know it. I have had several wonderful conversations concerning how I can be 'good without God'. some get it, some don't. Part of my 'mission' is to dispel myths about Atheists/Humanists/Agnostic people. So far I think I am pretty successful.
(I really enjoy your blog vjack, I start every day looking for a new post from you)

This is also sitting in my 'to read pile'. Thanks vjack for the 'preface', this lets me know this one can be a skim read, and not get bogged down in his writing style of using 'too many words'.
