Thank you for the nickel tour. It certainly reveals how well the designers stayed with the New England theme while maintaining a sense of elegance. Looking forward to the launch of the tour.

You are welcome, happy to have done it. It was not as bad as being on the surface, but a submarine is round ans very little roll resistance due to it hull shape. Add to that the sail acting like a big push-pull handle on top of the cylinder, with no corresponding handle on the bottom. The other factor is the actual effect that a wave has on the water, which is a rolling motion. On missile boats the flat superstructure can be affected by a wave traveling the length of the sub creating a suction, moving the sub up. Sometimes it was worse the deeper that we went because of the wave action. We stayed submerged for 74 days on one trip. Usually it was about 60 days, I am not sure what the patrol cycle is for the newer missile boats. The launch code process is very secure, don't believe everything that you see in movies. No hairy experiences, just calm cool 4-6 knot patrolling.

Did I mention that the Navy does psyche screening on submarine volunteers, if they find that you are sane they do not allow you on board submarines. What does that tell you?

I'll make it 3. I was the first on this thread and that is how I voted and I was amazed that there we're already a bunch of votes. So a lot of voters don't blog, that is their loss.

My daughter, who has an associates in mechanical technology lost her job 30 months ago and since she lives in the rust belt has not been able to find real work. She has utilized the internet to send out resumes and has attended numerous job fairs, she is still bar tending and not making ends meet. I don't know how people spend money entering these contests because they are all online. The libraries have computers and people could enter there for free. AnneElise I agree that must be some joke from Emma.

Found it. In another post I said that the blog is more about the people on it than the house and voting on paint colors, roof styles, etc. So I guess that we agree on that point. We had showers on and off today, heavy at times, but short lived. It would be nice if we could get water to WI. With all of the BS coming out of washington you never here about two big problems in this country. The first is a secure, resilient national power grid so that electricity can be moved from optimal generation points to the users. The other is a water distribution grid, to move water. There aren't even talks about capturing water in place that has too much this year and moving it to the drought areas. I also had an idea in 1977 for a national network that could be used from kiosks to express your opinions directly to Washington DC and possibly even to vote. Oh well the more people being paid to be employed by the government the fewer people on the welfare roles. Hope that things are quiet on the East Coast.

The short answer is that my Dad was a Naval Officer in WW-II and Korea. He wrote home about how well the WW-II submarine crews were treated and that he wished that he had gone into subs instead of Amphibious craft. The rest of the answer grew from that. Excellent training/educational opportunities. Relatively low level of chicken s.... , good food, close knit crews, extra money. I guess that I was never obsessed with seeing the sun everyday and there was, until we ran into storms up north or when we intentionally did heavy maneuvers, very little sense of motion. Because there is always the potential for things to go wrong in a hurry we were fairly busy keeping our training and readiness level up by doing drills and having lectures. The opportunity to learn was always there.

Thank you for the advice, but I am a thick skinned old submarine sailor who has learned that sonar pings, like words can't hurt me, but depth charges, like sticks can. Thanks again. It is raining in FL right now, but the sun will be out in 10 minutes. The rain drumming on the roof(wish that it was tin) is making me sleepy. Be safe

We rescued our sheltie Max and had him for 12.5 years before we had to put him down because of brain cancer. He had become one of our children and owned the couch in our house as well as our motorhome. It was a big loss when we put him down. He was kind of a wussy dog, but he barked like he meant it which made people weary of him and he always let us know when someone was approaching. I agree with Kitty that rescues and mixes make the best pets.

Just what everybody needs is a 6' plus 130 pound lap dog. Our Sheltie knew how to lie in a queen sized bed so the there wasn't room for anybody else. I can't imagine having great Danes, which are beautiful dogs, living with me in "their" house.
