I don't check bags on airplanes, use public transit instead of taxis/uber/etc, and I'm willing to do very long drives. Last time I went to London I stayed in a hostel that was £5 per night. Was it fancy? No, it was sorta gross. But it had women-only dorm rooms and allowed me to pay less for housing for my entire stay than I would have paid for a single night in a hotel! For my situation at the time, that made the difference between getting to go and not getting to go. So yeah, worth it.
