Thank you Richard. As I was growing up, some of the people I most respected were the Jewish friends of my parents. They were intrinsically ethical. Devoted to humanitarian causes, they fought against apartheid, racism, the bomb, Vietnam war and the expulsion of the Palestinians; and fought for the equality of women, workers and indigenous people. Educated and politically aware. None were zionists. By the late 1950s, Israel had broken their hearts.

I suspect there is another reason. To stop the Middle East from developing. Paranoid Washington politicians, defence forward planners and think tanks feared a time when a super wealthy Middle East and North Africa might be richer and more powerful than America. Earlier they were afraid that the Arab world might turn communist. One by one they have destroyed nations, used religions as weapons, installed their pet dictators (royal if possible). set nations against each other, and trained, armed and paid terrorists. All because they are afraid of the Middle East. They already had placed a thorn in the side of the Middle East - Israel. America developed a"special relationship” with it - supplying it with arms, fostering its nuclear weapons development, defending it politically and encouraging it to be, as Moshe Dayan said, “a mad dog”. However, because of their own actions, their nightmares came true on 911; and even more terrifying when Gaddafi proposed a Pan Arab union and a new international currency based on gold. No I was referring to the fact that Kennedy ended the arms embargo that the Eisenhower and Truman administrations had enforced on Israel. Describing the protection of Israel as a moral and national commitment, he was the first to introduce the concept of a 'special relationship' (as he described it to Golda Meir) between the U.S. and Israel.
