Alas -- I thought I'd replied to this! Thanks so much for the recommendations -- there was a gorgeous one made in Michigan as well... In the end, my LYS was having a pre-superbowl sale yesterday, which I combined with a Hanukah gift certificate and turned into my very own swift and ball winder!

Thanks! I found the Oregon person, and there's also someone in Holland MI who makes the most beautiful windmill-looking swifts, and alas, here I am back perusing them all again...I have to say, the knitpicks one is made in Italy, and it's probably not such a bad idea. (unless it's a bad idea) All the best.
