Yeah, it's not braggy. She's clearly pissed at the whole situation.

I took it as the movie acknowledging women are socialized to take on the emotional labor of considering everyone else's feelings and points of view before their own, while men aren't. The gun won't work on Trillian because she's already considered how they feel because, as a woman, that's what she's been trained to do her whole life. The dudes are clearly portrayed as the assholes for not ever thinking about Trillian's point of view the way she's thought of theirs.

"It won't work on me; I'm already a woman."

I love that part.

Nthing Ender's Game. My dear, dear husband owns waaay too much Orson Scott Card. He's also a Margaret Atwood completest and introduced ME to The Yellow Wallpaper, so he'll be spared, but still. And was there a Gaiman I missed?

It shook out that we own 19 of these books, 14 of which I brought into the relationship and two we both owned, and one we bought for both of us. The other two were The DaVinci Code and Fight Club.

Yeah. His point that public shaming is a blunt, imprecise weapon that doesn't always hit it's target is well taken. I also like his point that while those engaging in public shaming may individually not have much power, as a collective they have a lot and should be aware that the impact of utilizing that weapon could be much greater than they realize. But he fails to grasp (it seems) that for a lot of people, it's the only weapon available and the result of NOT using it is just as great.

He's well meaning, but he's never had to fight to be treated as a full human person and appears to really struggle with empathizing with those who have.

John Ronson was on Bullseye this week and I'm glad that Jesse Thorn pushed back at him a little about the shaming thing. Not as much as I would like, but he definitely said that it's easy for Ronson to take the position he does as a middle class white guy.

I usually like Ronson, and think he had a point about certain instances of public shaming, but he misses the mark on his overall conclusion.

Definitely in favor of using native plants in landscaping. If you're in the ohio/ky/Indiana area, the Lexington Zoo website is a great resource for finding indigenous plants and grasses.

Although, if you're in KY and having a hard time thinking of a native grass, I really don't know what to do with you.

Well, none of the state is flat. The middle part has rolling hills (pretty steep ones, but not mountains), but the eastern part of the state is mountainous; that's where the coal comes from. And the whole northern border is a really big river. That'll take you straight on down to the Gulf of Mexico. There are also a ton of lakes lying around.

The English language doesn't really have a letter to appropriately represent the vowel sounds in my pronunciation of Louisville, but its closest to Lullvull, I guess. But also kind of just Lllvll. If I'm talking to my northern OH in-laws, I'll say "oh, when I say that I mean lew-ih-vull"one time, but that's the least mush-mouthed I'll go.

Ok. So. in my area we have a saying "God willing and the creek don't rise". Well, the creek rose and rose, and doesn't appear to be going anywhere any time soon. Stuff's kinda flooded, but nothing crazy. Also, the grounds been real squishy for a while, so currently we're at peak groundwater. I've never watered my lawn in the 5 years I've owned a home and it stays green til winter usually. Once about eight years ago we had a "drought" and it turned brown, but there wasn't water rationing or anything. And that's groundwater!
