Mark Watches : Mark Does Stuff is going on hiatus

All my hugs Mark! When I heard the news through your social media I looked back to see what photos I have of Baize, and I have just this one that I posted to Instagram back when we visited Warwick Castle together: https://www.instagram.com/p/BJn3b5Zg_aL/?igshid=1... I don't know if IntenseDebate will let me post the link, but it's the two of you taking a selfie, which I took a photo of because photoception. Baize was a delight, and he will be missed dearly by many. I am so, so sorry.

I remember liking this book the first time I read it, but not being enamoured with it as I've been with some of the others. I think I was just not that interested in vampires at that point? Or going through it too fast to comprehend how well it's written and how serious it quickly got for the characters. I am way more into it this time around anyway. This is fantastic! It's mostly the Perdita/Agnes Agnes/Perdita of it all that I am loving. I've always liked that but I'm more into it this time around as well. Sometimes I wish my inner Perdita could come out swinging. But it's just a wish, honestly I quite like being slightly Agnes-like.

EefjeS : Knitting is the thing: a look at my current projects

Oh it happened to you too? It sucks but I am glad I'm not the only one. :D I really prefer wood/bamboo needles over metal, and I had an older wooden circular needle still lying around so I'm finishing the project on those. Although they are not as smooth as I would like them to be, I've been pretty hard on them in the past and it shows. I'll probably try others in the future. Maybe I do need to see how I do with other materials again.

Oh hi! I love this show. I commissioned this episode because when I originally watched it I assumed Lindus would be the overal bad guy of this season and then BOOM. 4th episode he's dead. Also I love, love, love the relationship that Hank and Steph seem to have. Fun fact, the actors are actually siblings.

Mark Reads : Mark Reads 'So You Want to Be a Wizard': Chapter 1, Part II

Eefje is unprepared for... So You Want To Be A Wizard - Preliminary Exercises 1.2 Wow! So much happened! I love the language describing the spell, it's poetic and filled with wonder. Some strange things are happening, the magic in this book seems impossibly huge. The first spell they work goes large and far away. I think the Manhattan they saw is in an alternative world where things are very different. Does that mean that Nita's pen fell through a hole in the world? Or is the place they saw somehow related to Nita and Kit's world and that's why they could learn where the pen is from it? Since spells always work, just not always in the way you would expect. And they meet a new person who is outside the realm of what we usually think of when we think 'person'. And they call him Fred. Because why not. Kit fixed his dogs nose. Aaaw.

Eefje is unprepared for… So You Want To Be A Wizard - Preliminary Exercises 1.1 TALKING TREE! Wizards these days, no respect for art. Hee. Kit and Nita bonding in the most heartbreaking way! They just want to stop getting beaten up and made fun of and have their favourite stuff stolen. They just want to be left to themselves and not be reduced. LET ME HUG YOU SWEET BABIES. Also you are the worst if you make fun of someone for their accent. Really. I only had time to listen to Mark’s video for this section, so I might have different comments later when I get a chance to actually read it.

Mark Reads : Mark Reads 'So You Want to Be a Wizard': Prologue, Part II

Eefje is unprepared for... So You Want To Be A Wizard - Prologue 1.2 Nooo poor Nita. This is super mean. I feel so dejected along side her. What is that thing that people can derive joy from hurting someone? (Seriously though Nita STEAL THAT BIKE.) The description of how her dad understands plants made me think WIZARD just like Mark said in the video. I also love that Nita is short for Juanita. This just all made me very sad, because it reads so real. While I was thankfully never really targeted by bullies in the same way, I know exactly how it feels to not be a fighter and to be in a situation that feels like I should be one. Nita please stop feeling like you're responsible for not fighting back well. Not being good at violence is never something to be ashamed off. I really love that that perspective gets explored here, wanting to fight back but not being able to because you're just not built that way is not often a narrative I come across in fiction (in a point of view character). Mostly it's power fantasy, it's Buffy having superpowers and taking on the bad guys even when everything helping her falls away. Which is it's own brand of empowering fiction that helped me a lot. But I'm really glad that Nita here is not like that, and that is portrayed honestly and real. Nicely contrasted with her sister who did take to the type of empowerment their parents could offer. Okay, I'm in. If everybody could just stop hurting Nita please?

Eefje is unprepared for... So You Want To Be A Wizard - Prologue 1.1 Okay here we go! I love the first glimpse of Nita and imagine her to be like a young Amanita from Sense8. The running from bullies and trying for sanctuary in a library was really well written and gives an immediate sense of who Nita is. (She's all of us!) The second bit of this part I liked less. Not the finding a special book, that has been every bookish kids fantasy since the dawn of time, mine included. But I felt like I often do when reading about a person reading, too much exposition, not enough story. Although watching Mark reading it after having read it myself made it work a lot more for me. I am also currently slowly starting to recover from the flu, so reading isn't as simple for me as it usually is. That probably impacted how I felt about this. I do really like some of the things Nita reads, the whole idea that death is not a negotiable thing is a good hard rule to establish early on and it definitely makes me curious to see more of the wizardry coming. I also really like Nita's response, if these things exist in the world alongside all the crappy things, that would make it worthwhile. Aw sweetie. Some of the description on the power of words reminds me of The Invisible Library. Which is a fun book that I can recommend. Also: Nita, you should totally steal that bike. (It's fictional, I'm allowed to be petty!) To everybody in Brussels, I hope you are safe and my thoughts are with you.
