I believe that there is a women’s perspective just as mentioned in class. Women biologically are able to stay aroused for hours and that is why foreplay is important. They also are able to have multiple orgasms because arousal can stay at its peak for hours. Men are not able to have this, once they reach their peak it will take a while for them to get themselves together for another round. This could show the pressure of men thinking they need Viagra in order to please their women.
Through television and porn we can see that since it is geared to men and their pleasure usually seems to end right when the man is satisfied. This could literally be minutes or close to an hour? With the women still not satisfied but accepting it. I think this is the reason women don’t speak up about not having an orgasm because that is not the social norm in what is broadcasted. So since we know women are able to stay aroused longer porn for women would be a completely different story.
I honestly believe that if there was porn for women it would be a serious movie, building emotionally or something then foreplay and completely pleasure for women, slow. This is awkward…any who. I think that the prospective of women would be in a completely different light and would lead men to having a more understanding for how to have sex with their girlfriends or whoever. I also think that it would pressure men into fitting into the image of what a man who is attractive to women would be.
As for advertisements that appeal to women the first thing that comes to mind are those Calvin Klein underwear for men advertisements. When they are laying or sitting with their muscles all flexed and with their gaze, I am sure every girl is a little intrigued by the advertisements. It all goes into what women are attracted to just as Men are able to choose what kind of porn or ads they want to watch specifically. Over all I believe that all women are attracted to the strong men.
One thing I also do want to say though is that it is amazing that people have not thought to target women in television because even in the shows we watch they are male dominated and do not show a women’s perspective of sexuality. Just as a guess, I think that the book fifty shade of grey is showing an exotic perspective of a women’s experience of sex. This was a bestseller book for weeks, even months. This is what women want to see, there is also lost of money in it especially if women are beginning to watch more and more porn. They want just as much exposure to their pleasures as men get.

I am born and raised in America, though I do not always claim it. But even in this I am fully engulfed in my culture back home, in Eritrea. I plan on studying here and getting my degree’s here in order to go back and help my country back home. As we all know, the United States is at the top for the educational system when reaching graduate and PHD level. Especially in the STEM areas: Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. The schools are what is making the decisions to come to the United States, not to say that all education abroad is not good enough, but everyone wants to be trained by the best.
Since the United States has a great educational system, in higher education, my parents knew this was the place I would have most opportunity. I feel that since we are in a country that is already well developed why would we stay here? Why should I help people who already have more then enough help? I would rather go help and develop countries that need my help in a great need. Though it may take years and years I would rather get my education here to help them to the best of my ability later. I am not too worried about the money aspect because I will be making money regardless and the fact that I can help others through my skill and develop countries would be a great achievement.
I also believe that other countries have the same viewpoints as myself. I actually really am happy that they do it this way because it is helping to bring all countries onto the same level. If we are developing all the other countries I know that it is not helping the United States in particular in many different ways. If all the other countries were advancing in technology and sciences then the powers of the world would shift. Which they are at the moment right now but then that makes me wonder why we allow people to come here. I would like to know more about the H1B passport that we give to people to come over to the United States.
In conclusion, I would like to get my MD degree and return to Eritrea and help the people of my country. I do not know how I will be going about it with a family but I know that ultimately I would like for my children to do the same thing as me. I also really feel strongly about this because with that passport they have brining over people they are taking away from the countries they have come from, and that is not right. Those people should return to their countries to help to develop them because if they do not how will they ever advance?

I feel as though we are already helping our own people, but only to the extent the government feels necessary. I recall hearing someone in class saying that it seems like a conspiracy theory that the United States would want to kill of all the Indians. The way I see it is that they are in a unjust way that is somewhat covered by dumb logic. Since we believe in the United states that you work hard and earn the American dream we have put people who work hard in positions to work hard and get no where. Indians for example, they are placed on reservations where they are making only five figures. If we really think about it why are they stigmatized and what would the United States get out of such a thing?
Well apparently we took their land, the land we live and study on, and we killed their people. Just like the holocaust they tried to cover it up. We have done an amazing job! When I think of history the Indians are not mentioned nearly as much as they should be if at all. The only time I remember hearing about them is around thanksgiving. I feel that we are continuing the killing of them by having them on reservations because they already are killing themselves. And if we think about why they are killing themselves it is because of the lack of support from the United States itself. If they were to die it does not affect them it only helps them to cover what they have already done and are already trying to wipe out to really clean up.
This really catches my attention because there are actually people who say that the holocaust did not happen and that makes me wonder if the Indians were to die off would anyone stand up to confirm that it did indeed happen? Who would educate the younger kids of the history if we ourselves never learned about the blood shed on their own land? It all makes sense: let them die in poverty in a country where you can work hard and earn what you deserve because apparently they can never work hard enough. That is America for you, great job in doing what you do right under the noses of your people.
How much longer will the legacy of the few left tribes continue on? Will the rich ones stay rich in money and culture? Or move onto a more “Americanized” way of life. Are the elders teaching the children their native tongue? Or are they immersed in an English? I remember in one of the lectures someone said that in the Indian reservations are elders who will die and their native tongue will die with them. How sad. I can’t believe that we have allowed ourselves to over look this. We are seriously too worried about ourselves and can we help it? But once again that is America for you, great job in doing what you do right under the noses of your people.

Well I would start off to say that my idea of affirmative action has nothing to do with not being qualified. It actually has everything to do with being qualified for a position; it is there to level the playing field for minorities who would otherwise be looked over. I feel as though it is in no way supposed to harm the outcomes of the jobs these people receive when they are just as qualified. Now if people are being hired and yet are unqualified then they should not be there in the first place and should be fired.
In addition to all this I think we need to step back and think about why any one would think that affirmative action would lead to less qualified individuals to get the job. That is like saying that those who have gotten their education and are entering to the field of their studies to unqualified as their counterparts, as far as race. Then again this may just be a mix up of the definition we are using when speaking about affirmative action.
I also would like to just say that this seems to be a problem in itself to ask something like this. Why are we still trying to think of minorities as less qualified? As if this is a handout? Is this a handout? Or is it just offering more position to people who are otherwise overlooked? I think that this is a problem in itself because just as Sam said, when white people hear affirmative action they think of lazy minorities trying to take their jobs. These are just more strings being pulled to looked down on even those people who are qualified. The statistics show that we need affirmative action because people of color are already being discriminated against.
I think our whole outlook on affirmative action needs to be established by the way Sam as laying it out in class. We need to open our eyes and see the light! Have a come to Jesus moment, everyone is in some way benefitting, or more so the white people in general. Are your parents lazy? Actually what’s funny about that is that now that we are thinking about the white people benefitting they are in no way lazy…crazy to think about right? I just want to point that out in its self, was your mother unqualified? Or do you think of her as hard working? If so then she benefitted from affirmative action and so did you. Just as the other children to minorities will when their parents are able to enter into they positions they deserve. Please think deeper into your thoughts about affirmative actions, it will really catch you with all the preconceptions you already are making.

There are two things that come to my mind when I think of things we take as taboo but are really natural. The first would be pooping in a public bathroom. We always hear the jokes about not being the one to stink up the bathroom or always ready to get on the one who does as if it is something unnatural. I even feel this myself, and I know the majority of others feel the same, that I am not able to peacefully let my digested food take its course through my body. It is really dumb when I sit and think about it but I still do not feel comfortable stepping into the bathroom and just letting out a load, sorry if that sounds disgusting. I do not know who started this whole thing but it needs to be killed because everyone makes fun of it as if they are exempt from the digestive system and pooping out their waste. Everyone acts as if they have poop that does not stink…awkward lol.
I also believe that for woman we take body hair way to seriously and males reinforce it. Every female believes that she must shave every hair off her body; well it all depends on the girl. Even though our hair growth is natural. Why do we accept it on the top of our heads but not in every other area? I love how I a sitting here and avoiding the one area I know most women think of shaving then they are getting ready for the summertime: VAGINA! Lmbo Sorry that was a little immature. Any who, I always found it funny that we promote months such as no shave November and it is suddenly accepted for men and woman but then again those same woman are ridiculed or among themselves say how disgusting it is for other woman to participate in such a thing. I just find it very annoying I shave my leg when needed not all the time. That is too much work that I do not have time for.
I have a hypothesis as to why we think of such natural things as taboo. I think it has to do with our ability to control it? In a sense, for example body hair we can shave and as far as our pooping goes we can use a bathroom that no one will be using for a while? Whatever the case I think since it is in our power to control we make it a taboo if someone else is not controlling that natural thing. That could even go as far as reaching into other natural things such as hair, since some African American woman do not get relaxers their naturally kinky hair is looked at as if there is a problem. Crazy to think about right??

I honestly believe that the reason people bleach his or her skin is due to what has happened in the past, and this goes for everyone. If we think back to when everyone was dark at one point. I would guess that back then there were people praised for their kinky hair and dark skin. Showing that they would survive all the weather that hit their areas. When we fast forward to everyone migrating we can see the slow change in skin color in order to better fit his or her environment, natural selection. I say all this to bring us to the times when those in the littler skin areas began to explore. When the west was beginning to look into other areas they never saw before. It was then that those who wanted to make sense of things influenced everyone: westerners. Even though it was none of their business.
In their journeys they began trying to understand countries, we can closely exam India for example. When the west came into there originally was no division among the people. They all lived in peace but of course the strategy as to divide and conquer, they began to draw lines and start conflict within the country. All this to say that in all the examples I could list of European or westerners entering into other countries these were the people who held the power. They created division and even went s far as treating those of a lighter complexion better then the darker ones. Now setting the desire to have lighter skin.
This can also be seen in the impact of media. Who has the most money to create mass media? To really control all that is seen? Western countries. This is what is broadcasted all around the world. In every single country, dark skinned or of a lighter complexion, is bombarded with what is perceived as the beauty: whiter skin. Everyone wants to be like the “most powerful” and these people are lighter.
With the evidence there also is a history of the darker skinned people being treated differently then their lighter counterparts but somehow there is always a western influence in the country. In conclusion the reason people are always trying to bleach their skin is to look most like what they aspire to be. Whether that be “beautiful” or to look like you have more money. There are many different perceptions people have of lighter skin. Then again I can look at what the Iranian woman said about the people wanting to be a darker complexion because it is a sign of being rich. But then I think of all the poor people in other parts who are a darker complexion and strive to be lighter because being light is what people like. I think it all depends on the country and what they are exposed to.

I tried posting this yesterday sorry it is now late -__-

I know that there are many people whose looks can be very deceiving. I do not see people any different but there is all the underlying racial stereotypes or barriers are a better word for all the interactions we have. I believe at Penn State University people are still a little on edge about talking to people of another race in different circumstances. When in a classroom setting black people seem to flock together. I think this is all because we allow it ourselves.
I can be a little hesitant when interacting with different racial groups but that is only because of the setting I am in. It all depends on the communities we are in. Back home there is diversity within my community. Not to say that I am not able to talk to whomever I want here but I am not sure of the reactions I will get, but then again it could also be the fact that we are all in our own little worlds when walking around. I don’t see people as being different by their skin its more about their outlook. What do you perceive me as? Where did you grow up? Where are you from? What are your beliefs? And so on. With the information we learned I believe that everyone should have learned it in high school. If not it should be information that everyone really takes a hold of and thinks about. Less then 1% of us is different, the gene that makes our skin pigments different. That should automatically make us think of how we are all messed up internally through our perceptions of the world and the people we are surrounded by. It is really incredible to think about.
It also makes me wonder where we go the idea that being a lighter complexion is really something to be proud of. Not that it isn’t but for it to be something that will make a darker skinned person feel insecure, in our society we see it everywhere in the media. We can clearly see that everyone came from Africa so why are the people in Africa not getting the praise they deserve?
I also believe that with this new information we should all step out of our comfort zone or make someone else step up by just sparking conversation. We really are all alike. Besides our up bringing but that is a different matter. We should not all be confined into the racial groups we seem to be forming. I could go as far as talking about all the groups around campus that enhance the divisions we see. It is great to celebrate your history, culture, and accomplishments but not to make others feel unwelcome. I feel like there is an underlying tension between some racial groups in some instances, and that is undeniable. But to bring it back we are seriously all basically the same.

The fact that I am rich is something that I came to terms with when I first visited my family’s home in Eritrea. It was mind blowing and really humbling, but most of all I was sort of ashamed. I was ashamed because I have so much money here, why don’t I donate it? Why don’t I send some home to help them? I would love to just blame the world I live in, America, but that is not an excuse.
I was really frustrated when we were talking about how all our clothes are made from slavery which just made me think about all the extra money we spend on clothes we don’t even need, jut to keep up with the trends in America. Now if someone were to ask me to give it all up I would be selfish and want to keep it. But I do take my little steps in helping me to be more appreciative of all the things I have. I already grew up with my father, who is Eritrean, and he has taught me to be smart with my money. Ii addition to that I am buying less because even though I want to get more things in my closet. It really does not make sense to. I already have enough. I actually have more then enough.
Bottom line after the discussion we had in class I could not help but be pissed. But then again if I think about my country specifically even though they do not have all the money in the world they are still happy. I cant say what they would do if they did have more money but as for right now, or at least what they showed me they are fine. When we are comparing we are usually comparing to the American standard. No one is so poor that they cannot eat. A family community also surrounds them; everyone is not out for them to be rich. That is a problem we need to get together in the US.
Rather then us looking at how poor the rest of the world is we need to re examine what we value. In Eritrean you retire when you are about 40, then your children take over and care for you. Here, we are so money greedy, we will be working even after we retire. So money hungry! Of course you would think it is because we want to be financially stable but when you have enough money to spend the rest of your life living comfortably you should stop trying to make money or begin to donate all the rest. Once again, it all about the standards we are going to be comparing to see whether we are richer or poorer then others because we are definitely poor in some areas they are rich in.

When the young woman stood up and said that she was Iranian I knew that she was a little nervous by her body language and voice tone. She was talking pretty fast and stumbling over her thoughts as well. I felt pretty bad and sort of understood how she felt because America has a way of making their enemies seem like they are the worst people in the world. It’s the people who are blamed for the actions of their government. Once America has found a target they will do anything in their power to dominate. Just as she said, they have sanctions on Iran, and for those who do not know about sanctions they are like penalizing them. It even can influence the business they do with different countries. I feel bad that she feels that way but it is perfectly reasonable because those feelings she has are from experience. Just because we are in Sociology 119 and we talk about the problems we see from different perspectives, we will never be able to understand how she is feeling studying and living here.
I completely agreed with all that she was saying, why would someone claim a place that is hated in the eyes of those they are surrounded by? I mean I know she is not scared to defend her own people but it is a barrier set when people begin to associate her with Iran, right off the bat. I also agreed with all she said on how it is all about the government and not the people, yet they are the ones who are affected.
It saddens me to know that there are wars between the governments and the few people who run it and still all the people are affected. Which makes me wonder why the people will not stand up against their governments but the governments have too much power for them to overcome without the loss of many. Her comments were filled with emotion and it really got to me because when you think about the people of the country of Iran, they are just blank faces. To her, they are her family. These are people who are struggling in order to live daily. Which really makes me tie that with the video Sam presented and how in there though to us they are the enemy, we are the same in their eyes. We never really step back and realize that they are out there to protect their people and we are the invaders. We are always going into places we don’t belong. Not to say that I am not in love with America but there are many corrupt things we do, such as bullying other countries into giving us what we want.
