I regularly struggle with the fact that my problems really are FWP, while so many others don't have that "privilege". But I am reminded that God sovereignly placed me in the first world, so he must have a reason! Keeping a proper perspective of those problems is hard, but I try to go back to the cross with that. Christ left heaven, took on flesh and then suffered not only the physical pain of the cross, but the spiritual/emotional pain of complete separation from the Father. He did that to take on my sin, so that my relationship with the Father might be completely restored, and that I might be a picture of his grace pointing others to his glory.....where ever I am! Right now, that's here in the first world, with all of my first world problems (my friends and I call those RPP's-rich people problems, because, let's face it, most of us in America are "rich"). I try to keep in perspective what is going on in my life in light of the cross. Praying for and reading about the persecuted church has been helpful.

"The gospel was preached even to those who were dead, that though judged in the flesh, the way people are, they might live in the spirit the way God does."

..in light of this we can be sober minded and self controlled, but apart of the the holy spirit, we can not. I love too that the purpose of our self control and sober mindedness is not to be better or get more done on our own. The purpose of that is so that we would be a part of what God is doing, for his glory, through devoted prayer. Because it is really Him who brings all things about, not our self control!

Love reading along with everyone!

This ending points once again to a need for Christ. No matter how hard they tried, the Israelites could not live in a holy set apart manner as they had been commanded to do. They quickly fell back into their sin. The Israelites did well when Nehemiah was there as a reminder to keep obeying, but once he left they turned back to their own ways. This reminds me that external sources can never provide the internal heart change needed for true obedience to God. These people needed Jesus, just as we do. There is nothing outside of the spirit living in us that will bring about any true and lasting change in our hearts. Thankful to live on this side of the cross, knowing that Christ's death has relieved me from the cycle of trying to obey on my own strength. Thankful to have the spirit living in me, and thankful that Christ's death was sufficient enough to pay for all of my sins!

I agree that this census was the beginning of God repopulating the city of Jerusalem. He is truly the keeper of his covenant and will accomplish his purposes (Christ as our redeemer!). I also love that those around them in enemy cities were afraid, not of the people, but of the fact that it was God who had accomplished this great work through them. I think it is so interesting that Nehemiah did not count his work done after the wall was built. He continued to listen to what God had laid on his heart, and did just as he said. At each step, Nehemiah heard from God, and obeyed whatever it was he was calling him to do.

I have spent much time building my own wall brick by brick. Love that Nehemiah was so focused on what God had told him to do. I also love that he was unwilling to compromise and go into the temple just to preserve his life. His faith was in the God who called him to this particular work. He on some level had faith that God would preserve him to accomplish this work (or accomplish it without him). He was not afraid of those threatening him.

Hove loved reading along with this plan!

I am really enjoying reading Nehemiah! The thing that stuck out to me was that he lived below his means for the sake of the people. He could have taken much more for himself, rightfully it was his as governor, but he didn't. This is something God is really pressing on our hearts as we look at how we handle our finances and leveraging even what is "ours" for the kingdom. Really none of it is ours, but it is hard to live that way at times. Nehemiah had one purpose, and wasn't greedy, but saw what was needed for that purpose to be accomplished and for the greater good of God's people.

So today is my first day on this plan, and I am excited to start! I love how while some were building others were standing guard. I have been so blessed to have some amazing women in my life who at different times have "stood guard" through prayer and encouragement while another was working through what God had given them. As the body, he uniquely equips us to build up the rest of the body. He also calls us to be ready for battle, not only for ourselves, but for those around us. As we all battle not against flesh and blood, but against the ruler of this world he has given us the armor that we need! Had those people not stood guard, the others could not have continued building. God's plans for redemption in the world, require everyone to play a role. I love how this passage so clearly depicts that!
