The Heritage Foundry : From Marriage to a Mere Contract

Prove that marriage is a religious institution first. Strange - I write about marriage laws in the US and never read that anywhere...

http://www.calamitiesofnature.com/ : Calamities of Nature - Civilized

Exhibitionism has always been a fuzzy issue and I admit it's difficult. But for almost every other situation, "injure" refers to physical and financial harm for adults. "Mental injury" by saying stuff for example doesn't count.

Actually I would call "civilized" the freedom to do whatever one wants as long as one doesn't injure anyone else. There are no other "rules" worth talking about.

Expressions - Bhagwad Jal Park : Is Islam really the most violent religion?

Yes Hari - Violence is violence irrespective of the disguise. Who is to say for example, that the victim would accept such a trade, where his/her life is traded off for blood money or forgiveness...

No issues :)

Actually when I said that I would write a separate blog post I was referring to the whole \"consensus\" thing.
http://culturalfascinations.blogspot.com/ : What people really mean when they say "society is being harmed."

Ask any of these people to name even two people who have been "harmed" when they say things like "society is harmed" and they'll stare at you with blank faces. What irritates me is that people accept such statements blindly. How can "society" be harmed when there's no such entity that's alive in the first place? Who measures it? Who defines it? Where is the gospel that states xyz is good or bad for something that no one can observe?

FoxTwo's Ramblings : NoSpamNX - Kicks Spam Comments In The Butt Differently!

I too am using NoSpamNX. What I'd really like though is a plugin that prevents the bots from accessing the site in the first place instead of blocking them after they submit a comment. I wonder if that's even technically possible - like perhaps checking for javascript or something. As of now a bot downloads the page, sends it back, and uses resources on the server. I wonder if we can stop them before that itself. I tried installed "Bad Behavior", but it hardly stopped anything. Till then, NoSpamNX it is!

http://culturalfascinations.blogspot.com/ : Outsourced: Arranged marriages vs. 'Love' marriages

For me, it's not a question of whether or not we get a better choice. As was mentioned, even arranged marriages have an element of choice. The important distinction for me is that in cultures where arranged marriages take place, there's no option not to get married at all!

I think multi culturalism can be extended only to the point where the practices don't infringe on another person's freedoms. Going by that definition, it means we respect the way people dress (something that France isn't doing with the Burqa), respect their opinions, their way of looking at the world, what they eat, how they look, what job they do etc etc. But it shouldn't extend to supporting practices that harm someone else.

Expressions - Bhagwad Jal Park : Kashmir - Azadi from what??

Thanks for dropping in Croor. But Independence from Britain was very different. Indians didn't have the same rights that Britishers had, we were treated as second class citizens, Non Britishers couldn't run the country, command the armed forces, make policy decisions and what not... For Kashmiris, there are no such barriers. Any Kashmiri has all the rights and privileges of an Indian citizen. They can run for prime minister or achieve any of their dreams with the same effort that anyone else would put in. They're not deprived in any meaningful way.

I think that in the long run, our real Indian traditions will show themselves. Even those regarding inclusiveness. Just imagine. Just 63 years into our independence we decriminalized homosexuality. It took the US 225 years for the last state (Texas) to do that. We've had a woman prime minister, a Sikh prime minister, almost had a foreign born pm, a woman president, a muslim president and what not...

Yes - we need to have more self respect. And one sign of mature self respect is tolerating criticism, not being overly touchy and learning to laugh at oneself. Otherwise it's just insecurity masquerading as self respect...

It's like these ways of thinking are maps that help us navigate reality and make sense of it. But every now and then we must see if our maps are indeed reflections of the landscape...if we continue to operate with outdated maps then we'll get into trouble sooner or later. The map analogy is plagiarized from Scott Peck :)
