Even if parents are teaching kids at home about personal finances, it doesn't hurt to have the school reinforce it. You know how sometimes kids think their parents go overboard on things and then tend to rebel or not accept it? Well if they hear the same message at school, hopefully some of it will sink in. This also helps to counteract the issue of yoyo debt, whereby one generation doesn't learn from the previous and the pendulum keeps swinging back and forth - one generation tight money managers, next generation loose and back and forth.

Goal is to meet our $60K debt repayment plan for the year. At $48K right now. Hopefully Murphy doesn't pay us a visit. ;-)

Oh wow. What a coincidence, Judy. I've just been cleaning up my email and found your reply to the comment above. Are you from the Ottawa area?

Glad you had an extra long trip. I've eaten alligator many years ago - tasted like chicken.

I agree with everything in your list. I'm struggling a bit with building a passive income to make it a reality. How much of today's happiness am I giving up, to obtain happiness in 5 years? That's the conumdrum I find myself in some days.

It's amazing the number of Europeans who think we celebrate Thanksgiving with the US. I work with a lot and they are always wishing me a Happy Thanksgiving in November but have no clue why I'm off the second Monday in October. I explain to them but by the time November comes, they've forgotten! LOL

I love elephants! I had many stuffed animal elephants as a kid, which started with one when I was five years old. They're quite intelligent.

I count on my emergency fund as my stress buster, and yes, I've had to dig into it when hubster's variable income was low for a number of months. Some of it is in cash and the rest (up to 6 months income) is in TFSA's (from Canada) which is something like Roth IRA. For our mortgage which we are trying to pay off quickly, our bank offers a double up payment option. I double which brings down the principal that much fast but that's not all. Each additional payment counts as a 'brownie point', such that, if we ever had a big financial emergency we could stop paying our mortgage for the number of payments that we doubled up with no penalty. So in a way, it sort of counts as part of my emergency fund as well.
