I hear what you're saying about Hafner being one-dimensional, but I've got to go with scenario 3. Once Teixeira is back, does Overbay's ability to play first really give him an edge over Hafner? With both Adams and Youkilis on the roster, the latter can backup at 1B and still leave a 3B option who provides about as much offense as Overbay. I'll be sad to see Overbay gone, but I think that's the best option.

I'd agree with you if we were simply talking about players who are healthy but slumping. But, if A-Rod is still struggling as he tries to come back from a wrist injury, and there is a right-handed pitcher on the mound, then considering Chavez in his place is a viable option.

Chavez hit .298/.365/.543 vs. RHP this year, A-Rod .256/.326/.391. This is over 250 PAs for each we're talking about.

Obviously, only A-Rod knows for sure if his wrist is still affecting his ability to hit, and Girardi probably knows better than we do. But, if the wrist is a factor, then "dance with the date that brought you" does not necessarily apply.

He (#2 starter - Kuroda) would be pitching game 1 of the ALCS. This whole scenario only applies if the ALDS goes five games.

Even funnier if it's in extra innings.

But, I think Keith's point was game 3 of the ALDS is Oct. 10 and game 2 of the ALCS is Oct. 14. So, either the #3 guy is going on short rest, or they have to use the #5 guy. It's getting way ahead, of course, but the teams in the other ALDS don't have this disadvantage.

As William pointed out the other day, McGehee has been buried deep on the bench for a while. I looked up previously, but don't think he even has a hit since mid or late August (mostly due to a lack of playing time).

I'm going to throw out the suggestion that they might take 12 pitchers, with both Eppley and Lowe making it. I'm not sure it's necessary, but since they're playing 5 games in 6 days, I think it's possible. If Nix were healthy, I would say they take him as the 14th position player, which would allow him to be the primary backup infielder (not that he'll be needed unless there's an injury), while using Nunez in a platoon DH role.

If I recall correctly, the pitch was in the dirt and to Cervelli's right. That's pretty typically ruled a wild pitch, as it should, even if we think Stewart or Martin would have been able to block it.
