http://www.endhereditaryreligion.com/2009/10/free... I attended a presentation over the weekend that reminded me of the brilliance of the founders in how they architected our government. The Executive and Legislative branches are intended to reflect the opinions and will of the majority of the population. But the founders knew that this could lead to abuses of the rest of the population, people in the minority on an issue - this is referred to as the tyranny of the majority. So the Judicial Branch, and in particular the Supreme Court, was set up to represent the interests of the minority, to block the tyranny of the majority. This was expressed in the recent Prop 8 ruling in California, which stated that the majority do not ever have the right to deprive any minority population or interest of their rights, that rights cannot be taken away just because the majority of our population desires this.
