It's a constant battle, Mike. No magic answer yet :(

I guess I'm wondering if the disclaimer should even be needed. My argument is that it's redundant, but I guess that's only true if one believes that it's possible for people to change.

I agree that students need to learn how to do these things. However, I also think that students need exposure to computer science concepts that build habits of mind of that field. In fact, I do teach word processing and other such technical skills to students either within a project framework or through integration into core classes. We\'re in the process of trying to formalize what this looks like on paper.

Hi Julie,
Thanks for visiting. I used to do 1,2,3 and still use that method sometimes but I realize that each student already trusts particular members in the class and have a relationship with them and I didn't want to trample over their relationships by having them limit their support network to neighbours only. I model what help looks like (doing with, not doing for, or using words not mouse control, etc.) and I want students to practice this in their chosen peer communities as well because those persist beyond my classroom.

Thanks so much, Kelly. I did have a discussion about branding with the class last Thursday. It was a great discussion that we used for creating a mind map to post in the classroom. I'm really excited about this unit and if Thursday discussion is any indication, so are the students.

Thanks for visiting Troy. Hope that you enjoyed your summer. I have my students working on scenarios in all three computer classes at the moment (6,8,9). It's fascinating the level of discussion and thought that they're putting into it. Many of my students tested as multimodal or kinesthetic in the VARK learning styles quiz that we did on the first day so there are lots of skits being prepared. I'm looking forward to recording them to share with the other classes.

Have a good first day with students next week.

I agree with you. I haven't taught computer applications as a stand-alone class in several years. I think that every student should have the opportunity to create a program at some point(s) during their K-12 experience. Luckily, I have lots of autonomy so I'm working on a Grades 6 - 9 curriculum that does not focus on particular applications.

I\'m heading back to Japan. I decided that 4 years in Sudan was enough. Are you coming to ISTE?
