Par for the course: the critics seem to love everything everyone else can't stand, and vice versa.

I've yet to hear anything good about this book. :(

Excellent point, Jenny, I'd never really thought about it like that. I hate the Harlequin-ized versions. :) The original stories are nearly perfect, so why mess with a good thing?

I'd heard that this book kind of featured the Northanger Abbey plot. I read that one just recently; it was okay, but so different from the rest of Austen's work. It's hard, I think, for authors to branch off in new directions — especially when their previous novels do well and people come to expect certain stuff from them.

I'm your opposite: I never really watched the show, but read and re-read the books until my copies fell apart. I loved Wilder's voice, and the enormous adventure her family was on.

This reminds me of a "famous novels as inspiration" book I read recently: The Heroine's Bookshelf: Life Lessons, from Jane Austen to Laura Ingalls Wilder, by Erin Blakemore. It's gotten me interested in some more of the classics that I haven't read yet. Nice to see there's more in this genre. :)

Austenland was a huge disappointment for me. I think it's just that I don't like that angle on Austen — modern woman "escaping" to an Austen-themed vacation spot. It cheapens Austen into some sort of theme park ride. But that's just me. :)

Congratulations on getting picked for World Book Night! I just signed up last week, so fingers crossed.

I haven't read The Hunger Games simply because it's dystopian, which I know from experience ("Maybe I'll like this one...") that I'll never like. Ever. :) Life goes on.

Mark Twain makes me laugh out loud. Plus he was an interesting guy — very snarky. :)

I haven't read A Study in Scarlet yet, but I mean to (you know, someday). I hate when final chapters don't wrap things up nicely.

Aha, The Diaries of Adam and Eve, hilarious! I love Mark Twain's humor. :)

I love your Christmas list. Rothfuss is, of course, a genius, and I've had Geist on my list for ages. I stumbled across Hieber's book at my hometown library a couple weeks ago, and now must have it.

Hm, Sherlock Holmes...I love the BBC series, and reading The Hound of the Baskervilles was scary, but...eh, I just can't get into the short stories. They're over too fast, and I don't have time to get involved enough. I do need to read A Study in Scarlet, though.
