It's always made sense to me on an unconscious level, but I recently tried to pull it apart on a conscious level. I think some of it has to do with him being restrained and only fights back defensively, like roses won't go after you, but if you go after them, you will get all kinds of hurt from thorns. In the newest thing I did with the five characters, the solid stonework wall behind him and the roses is also representative of his stalwart nature.
