TechCrunch : Reddit Asks Users For Money To Hire People Because "Revenue Isn't Great"

They have a choice. They can run adverts like they do: a single box at the side and treat users well, or they can cover the site in adverts (like digg), treat users like shit and make lots of money. they choose to treat users well.

> Reddit is hoping that its users and fans will donate the money needed to hire more people and buy more servers, so they don’t have to revert to other tactics like intrusive and obnoxious advertising. But rather than call it what it is – donations – the company is asking people to subscribe to reddit gold and pay as much as they want for it. reddit would never revert to such adverts.

Jesus Christ Siegler. Facebook and Twitter are not at all competitors, whatever gave you that idea? Has anyone ever said "I am going to use Facebook, not Twitter" or "I am going to Twitter, not Facebook!"? No. Does Arrington have a gun to your head and a demand of 100 articles, regardless of quality?

That site is awful to look at and the functionality is piss poor. That could easily be achieved using (X)HTML, CSS and Javascript. The point of Flash is provide what they can't, using it to replace what (X)HTML, CSS and Javascript *can* do is ridiculous. I hope to god you're not working in any professional setting.

TechCrunch : Scribd's Decision To Dump Flash Pays Off, User Engagement Triples

The title is very misleading, dumping Flash didn't cause the larger uptake or that uptake would have been over the last month, not the last 3. 2 of those months were BEFORE they dumped Flash. It might have been a part of it, but there is a clear contradiction there. In fact, the visitors haven't even changed, just the time current visitors remain on the site, that could surely be argued is down to the Facebook integration, why would HTML5 switch change that?

TechCrunch : Guy Who Copied Digg Slams Digg For Copying Twitter

Looking over the wikipedia article for Digg, it would appear that at the launch of reddit they were very much in their infancy, they were *literally* an article dump, they didn't even have their now well known in page digg buttons or even categories. Anyway, the point is, even if reddit did see Digg and think "hey that's a good idea let's make our own!": Digg was still in its infancy, it was nowhere near a full product, it was a core idea, an idea that had been used elsewhere before. Imagine if I see techcrunch and think "hey that's an awesome idea, a blog about technology!" and so I create my own. Did I "copy" techcrunch? Yeah, I took their core idea, but I then built my own ideas into it and created my own product. reddit and Digg are very very different now, reddit has a huge focus on community and discussion, digg has a focus on getting the "best" links to the front page and comments are an after thought. I don't know if reddit copied digg, I very much doubt it as digg had very little traffic at launch, but for arguments sake let's say they did, even then it was only an idea, copying an idea and cloning are different, the internet works before of the former and it's only bad when the latter happens.
