You yanked the heart right through the skin, and drug me through this maze of emotions so carefully. The line that landed the first thud was:

"Heavy curtains swallowed the remainder of the evening sun, leaving him to stumble toward the nursery in the dark."

That set the stage, and let me know what he was facing. This was an excellent write on so many levels.
