"If Chris Pratt were your boyfriend, he’d understand that you love superhero movies and television shows because of their reassuringly formulaic stories of good versus evil and their charismatic heroes and antiheroes. He wouldn’t judge when you get the characters’ comic book backstories mixed up"

My kids are almost 6, 3.5 and almost 2. We're both atheist/humanist/agnostics and we're raising our kids with no religion. So far we've had no problems. We've been lucky that our kids are going to a great public school (Cincinnati's School for the Creative and Performing Arts) and good public preschool. No religion problems yet (fingers crossed). I lean heavily on advice from the community that has sprung up around Dale McGowan's "Parenting beyond Belief" and the Science Based Parenting Blog.

At the Schmoo's age (shes the almost six), belief in god is pretty much up there with belief in Santa. She's seen enuff Veggie Tales to get the basic OT bible stories without too much preaching involved. BTW I recommend Veggie Tales so far as a kind of cultural literacy class for kids who wont be getting a formal religious education. They pass the funny test for me (and I consider myself a connoisseur of preschool tv)

My wife and I actually use our iPhones as e-readers all the time, using both amazon Kindle and Stanza, which both work pretty well once u get used to the small screen.
My biggest problem with e-readers as source of reading material is price. There is no "used e-book store".

Cadfile has the right of it here. This whole controversy doesn't pass the smell test. If anyone wanted to object to this building there was plenty of time to do so and a proper forum to do it in. The only reason anyone outside of lower manhattan even knows about this is because Pamela Gellar (a real fringe nutcase) got into a snit about it on her fringe blog and Fox News decided it it could be used as fodder for their political circus act. Caving in now is only going to embolden these people. I know that not all the folks opposed to the Park 51 center are nutjobs, but I also thinkthey need to be aware that they are being used in a cynical political ploy.

I'd just like to chime in that I really hate using the term "ground zero" (capitalized no less) for the former WTC site. I know it's common now after a decade, but there were 2 other plane crashes that day, and I grew up thinking of Hiroshima as THE Ground Zero.

As for the silly controversy, at some point we have to realize that the professionally affronted class in our country deserve none of our time. For fuck's sake, they got this approved thru the zoning commission in Manhattan, which is next to impossible from what i've heard. As far as I'm concerned, if Manhattanites don't care, why should we?
