A lot of women who convert or adopt the hijab later in life express a sense of relief at not being ogled, sexualized and objectified all the time. The also talk about freedom from the body image issues of tight clothing. Our society imposes its own expectations on women. Not everyone feels liberated in a bikini.

I feel actually that's more a trait of omnivores. I mean, they'll keep some animals as pets and eat other ones, for fairly arbitrary reasons. But yeah, a lot of people are more outraged at cruelty to dogs and cats than to swine and cattle.

I have struggled with labels and identity for a while. One thing I do is to change what I call myself based on whom I'm speaking with. To people that are GLBTI, or knowledgeable about our community and politics, I will identify as queer. To Joe Q. Heterosexual, I identify as 'bisexual', as that makes more sense in the mainstream culture. Sometimes I have to take on some baggage and poor assumptions when I identify as bi, but I try to battle these. I personally feel 'queer' is for advanced players.

Ah, the sporks, they can sneak up on you, even in ostensibly safe spaces. I was at Toronto Pride last Sunday (fun overall) and one spork lobbed at my eye was a young woman wearing a shirt with a rainbow on it with the words "I LOVE DICK" Ah, I understand, hetero shield, it would be terrible for you to be misidentified as one of those, *gasp* homosexuals. Or maybe it was an obnoxious "ME TOO! ADMIRE MY LOVE OF DICK! STRAIGHT PRIDE!" thing. I'm maybe being uncharitable, but it irked me quite a bit. I'm bisexual. I love dick too. I know better than to appropriate a queer symbol to express that (at least to the exclusion of my pussy loving ways). Sorry if this is a derail, Sparky, but appropriation is a big spork in a supposedly safe space :(

Too many of us neglect self-care and work only to please others. Expectations can eat away at you. True happiness tends to come from intrinsically valuing yourself, and these folks' job is to only think of themselves as conduits for other peoples' visions, to only get value from what others think of you. I just hope that models can have better mechanisms for monitoring themselves and seeking help.
