OK, so I'm watching football and idly perusing Wonkette's recipe hub. Lo, what's a Cherpumple? And that leads me off on an odyssey that finally lands me at this fact: They aren't called Fig Newtons anymore. What?!? Nope, they're now just "Newtons." And so another piece of childhood is lost: "Darn tootin', I like Fig Newtons!" You're welcome for the earworm. And I love Wonkette for just this sort of odyssey.

Honestly, I cannot believe we're still fighting this fight. When I was in college & grad school in the 70s in a field that was male-dominated, we women were pleased that we were making progress. My potato pancakes are made from grated potatoes, but these sound yummy, too. I haven't made potato pancakes in years and years and years because my husband thinks they're for breakfast ONLY. Harrumph. This year was a sad mashed potatoes year for me. I couldn't taste them. I've lost my sense of smell and tasted, courtesy of some medication. I mourn the mash potatoes.

One of my favorite US Thanksgivings was the year my father-in-law died. My mother-in-law wanted to be alone that year, so my husband and I took off for Nova Scotia. We had lobster rolls in Lunenberg on Thanksgiving Day. Perfect!

I live in Maine. I suspect there are racists who loathe Paul LePage -- it's that easy. On another note, my mother just got more and more liberal as she grew older. My father, on the other hand, started to let the prejudices of his childhood out. He disliked that my mom liked gay people. He thought Detroit, where he worked for almost 40 years, was ruined by blacks. And so on. Let the shock wear off and steer the conversation to shared experiences or her childhood memories. My dad and I watched a lot of sports together. I miss them both.

One local supermarket prepares $10 boxes of food -- canned goods, pasta, and so forth -- to buy and they'll deliver to food pantries. Another local supermarket has "turkey tickets" in denominations of $2, $5, and $10 at the checkouts. Every time I stop by either store, a box or a ticket goes on the conveyor belt. But that's only around the holidays so it's up to everyone to donate to provide food year-round. And remember that it's cheaper overall to donate money to pantries than it is for you to buy food and donate it. p.s. Great post. p.p.s. What's wrong with us that we scold or make fun of hungry people?
