Assassin's Heart: YES YES AND MORE YES! Ugh. I wanted to like this book but, no, it just wasn't happening. Yes to why the heck does it matter who the 1st, 2nd, 3rd families are. God's favor? HUH? Where was the real world building. Not in this book. That's for sure. The romance? BLAH! At first I was like ok, Romeo and Juliet, and then it was gone. And I was left...hanging? I think using that story line would have worked out better than Les. And can we talk about the ghosts? Was this fantasy? was it paranormal? What was the point of the ghosts? Again, world building gone wrong. I just was not a fan. I gave it two stars, though looking back I should have probably gave it one. And the telling, yes. SO. MUCH. TELLING. I want to be shown. In a fantasy book showing and world building are THE MOST important aspect. Great review!

Haven't heard of the first one but it sounds interesting. I am looking forward to ACoMaF. I wasn't thrilled with the first one, but I liked it enough to go on to this. And that cover! Nice picks. Have a great week! My WOW

I had a lot of the same issues with this Burning Midnight that you had. Mostly I thought it was written for a much younger audience than YA. Maybe Upper Middle Grade. I was annoyed with the spheres and the lack of world building around them. I know it was meant to keep us in suspense until the end but it just didn't work for me. And the ending was definitely rushed. There were obvious pacing issues with this. And the situations were too easily resolved. Not enough conflict for me. And I disliked the romance, or maybe I just didn't feel it. There was no build up and no connection for me. Overall I liked the idea and thought the writing was quite good. I haven't read this author before. I know he usually writes adult and now that I know that I feel perhaps he was overcompensating on that end trying to write a YA. It was good but not great.

I really wanted to like this more. I had heard such great things about it from many of my friends. Unfortunately, it didn't hit the mark for me. It had too many elements of other books kind of smashed into it and then the *SPOILER* love QUADRANGLE? WHAT? I just can't. Plus, the plot twists were obvious for me and I knew they would happen. The ending was very *SPOILER* Catching Fire for me. However, all that being said, it intrigues me enough to read the next one. I thought the writing was good.
