The Blazing Center : Album Review: Death Cab For Cutie - "Codes and Keys"

I like their production, but with bands who self-produce, perhaps that can't be separated from songwriting - in a sense, the production is an extension of the songwriting. That said, I heartily agree that both songwriting and production are remarkable. I haven't been keeping up since Narrow Stairs; I guess I'll get this one too. I can always use some instruction. =)

Ron Edmondson : If a Wife Wants to Encourage a Husband

As Joe pointed out, WORDS may not work for everyone. But the fact remains that respect makes the man's world go round. In the context of marriage, I like Dr. Eggerichs's approach; it has worked well for us.

Stuff Christians Like - Jon Acuff : Listening to devil music.

I resonate with your feeling! I'm not a screamo fan myself, largely because it's not what's in my heart unless I'm deeply upset about something. I generally don't use it for praise. Actually, I never really have. But I think that's the point. Here's an example: I grew up around people who couldn't (or wouldn't?) even clap their hands in praise to the Lord, let alone play a guitar or dance. But obviously, that doesn't mean no one can. I do all those things now (although my 'dance' usually involves barely moving my legs while playing my guitar)... I guess what I mean is that there is a certain beauty in seeing someone else praise God from a pure heart, often in ways we don't understand. This seems especially pertinent in intergenerational churches, where there are a wide diversity of musical preferences. It's up to the indivudual whether they're praising God from their heart or not, rather than up to me (as a worship leader, that's hard to handle when they're embarrassing me). To put it into another context, my church just can't agree what they want in a worship service. Some people want country gospel, and some people want rock and roll worship (a la Kutless, Seventh Day Slumber, etc). Some people can't stand hymns (even in a modern style) and some people criticize choruses. But we worship together because (hopefully) we're there for God, and that helps us see beauty in things we wouldn't have necessarily chosen for ourselves. So while I don't get into the screamo, I truly believe that some people could commune with God through it. I can't really commune with God through the Gaithers - it seems so plastic and unreal to me. But I have dear friends who love it. It doesn't mean either of us is wrong, just that we're different.

The Blazing Center : Songwriting Tip: What Do You Listen To?

Recovering classical pianist, now worship leader. I'm listening to a lot of piano rock and such (currently Jack's Mannequin is playing) to get some perspective on worship leading using piano in innovative ways. I don't know if I want to take that to its logical conclusion, though. In my locale (rural Montana) country is the predominant genre. i don't know if I can take my artistic integrity there... =) OK, maybe once in a while.

The Blazing Center : Let's Hear Your Premarital Advice

Four great years so far, and I feel completely inadequate to give someone advice. But I trust that God works wisdom in those who follow Him, so here goes: - Frequently (constantly?) ponder the amazingness of your spouse. Always be looking for new wonderfulnesses. They're there just waiting for someone to find them. =D Be vocal about how great they are (with tact, of course). Never publicly criticize them. - Understand how to lead as well as how to follow. You might think that's advice for executives or pastors, but it's not. It's for you. My greatest successes in marriage have been the times I followed God well and led with clarity and gentle strength. On the other hand, many of the most difficult problems in my marriage have been the result of me failing to lead effectively, or of me failing to follow my Leader. - Both of you, determine to persistently resolve relationship problems as soon as possible, and as privately as possible. Don't take them anywhere until you've taken them to each other and to God. The unity of your relationship is costly - far more costly than the short-term satisfaction of venting to your buddies (or girlfriends) about it. This should go without saying, but never say a word about a marriage problem on Facebook. - Truth in marriage is indispensable. So is Spirit-driven gentleness. Use them both - at the same time, and often. - Enjoy yourselves. God made us for His own pleasure - he's definitely a God of great enjoyment. Marriage is a reflection of the supreme sacrifice and enjoyment Jesus has in the Church. Revel in what He's doing. Ben

Ron Edmondson : 7 Qualities to Look for in a Pastor's Wife

You mentioned "visible and active" in ministry. Here's what I'd add to counterpoint that, and Lariann already mentioned it. I say it strongly, if only because I've seen so many churches afflicted by it. She needs (and you need) to understand that family comes before ministry. At the bottom line, pastors/spouses who put the church first often lose their family (at least in terms of their spiritual life) - and with it, they lose their ministry credibility. To put it another way, she needs a sense of work/life balance. This is an area where you as a pastor can lead as well. She's less likely to burn out if you're actively leading and developing your family and putting them first. Bottom line: if you're not pastoring (serving, leading, developing, loving) your family, you're not pastoring anyone. And a potential pastor's wife needs to understand that and be an active part of it.

Good post. Mark, I'm honestly scared about how I've been changing lately, and by what is going on in my life. Many people would call it success; I'm not always so sure. But I look forward to looking back on it 100 years from now, able then to see the tale of grace worked out.

Thank you for this word, Haezeus. I've had some difficulties with anxiety as well, sometimes testing or even alienating family, friends or coworkers in the process. But even in the midst of struggle, it's amazing to read what the Scripture says concerning the great worth God has ascribed to us. It's relief in the truest sense.
