I can remember thinking this book was funny...then thinking maybe it was more scary than funny...then thinking it was funny again. But Elton definitely has an agenda - he's not a fan of technology or social media at all and it shows - and I think he's kind of throwing the baby out with the bathwater so to speak - there's probably a happy medium somewhere between sharing EVERYTHING and connecting with people in different ways. I know for me there just aren't that many people into books in my real life so if I didn't have other book bloggers to talk to I'd be talking to myself most of the time :(

But I am very particular about what I share in public - I don't have a facebook page and don't care to - one of my young staff has pictures of her and her friends on the toilet on her FB page - apparently it is funny to take such photos when you are at nightclubs - one of them has even been stalked as a result but it's all a big joke to them - I find this behaviour completely nonsensical. But they tell me I'm just a silly old woman :)

I have tried a few Good Reads groups with book discussions and have not found them particularly enjoyable - the ones I participated in tended not to generate much discussion and were a bit disorganised as no one was really responsible for leading things.

I've also joined in a few times with an email based group that has a better method - someone leads each book discussion by asking 5-7 decent questions about the various aspects of the book and kind of keeps the discussion going where necessary. This works better though I find the email format hard to follow but I think if you used this format on a website or blog where discussions could be easily followed you'd get a good result.

I'm space-poor too which was my main reason for buying an eReader (which I agree is totally different to catching snippets of a book on your phone). To be honest I don't miss much about 'real' books apart from the ability to pass on a book I've enjoyed to someone else.

Oh and I think I must have been having my 'work/life is crazy meltdown when your bubs was born as i missed that announcement - so CONGRATULATIONS - hope you are all doing fabulously and that he is starting his own library :)

Not harsh...I agree with you. I read this one last year and couldn't even think of enough to say about it to cobble together a review...there is nothing wrong with it but nothing to make it stand out really - at least for me. Much prefer Inspector Singh though I hadn't read him when I read this one.

Hope you are surviving the heat OK and that it soon cools down for all of us. Funnily enough one of my goals is to disappear from Adelaide during writer's week though I suspect I won't be able to

I like to be organised too so I can understand the feeling of accomplishment you got from learning a new skill AND getting organised - double bonus :)

As for why some posts get more views than others I don't think I'll ever be able to work that out, my most popular post from a viewing perspective is from early last year asking which Jo Nesbo book I should read, and this month four people have arrived at my blog after searching for "caroline proust' which is not, as far as I know, a name that appears anywhere on my blog (I've no idea who she might be - too terrified to google)

Happy New Year and hope 2012 is a magical one for you and your growing family :)

Like you I've read this one a few times Becky and don't remember when I came to realise it was her first. But I was really impressed when I re-read it fairly recently (listened to the audio version narrated by David Suchet) and thought about how terribly good it was for a début. Many of the attributes that have become associated with Christie and the best whodunnits were all there on display which is quite remarkable. I agree too that the description of Poirot is quite perfect and is consistent across the novels. No wonder her work has maintained its appeal all these years really :)

I tried to comment on this one from work yesterday during my lunch break but the dinosaur version of IE that my office uses wouldn't let me. I'm glad you enjoyed the book and I don't think it's shallow to enjoy the home town feel - I liked it too (Sydney used to be my home). And I think this kind of comic caper is meant to be over the top and not entirely believable - fun is the most important thing I think and I'm increasingly turning to this kind of thing for purely escapist reading where I just want to be entertained and don't have to think too deeply - much needed on occasions for us all :)

ooh I just bought that PD James book - it looked so nice and small on the shelf I couldn't resist it :) I figured it would be one of those I can read bits and pieces of as I carry it around with me :)
