<description>I too was a bit disheartened when I came across Fred&amp;#039;s post. As an agency guy, who recently turned my attention toward working with start-ups I agree that most agencies and start-ups probably wouldn&amp;#039;t be a good fit.   To Darren&amp;#039;s point, if there isn&amp;#039;t a marketing minded person in the start-up they desperately need an outside eye to help position their venture. Especially if someone from a technical background puts so much effort into building a product they can have a tough time taking a step back to figure out what the best way is to move things forward.  Did any other marketing people respond to Fred&amp;#039;s post? I&amp;#039;ve been looking for blogs/people to follow that have a lot to say about start-up marketing, especially after seeing that. Any resource suggestions be greatly appreciated. </description>

<description>Hey Mike,  Thanks for writing this post, such an important topic (way more worthwhile than another stat on how many companies are or aren&amp;#039;t using Twitter).  I find myself in a similar situation cringing at some of the digital behaviors of our youth. As a digital marketing consultant, I&amp;#039;ve been praising the promise of these new technologies, but I also have been learning more and more about the negative side effects of our increasing use of digital.   The one thing I would add is that the bystander phenomena is not entirely new. &amp;quot;The greater the number of people present, the less likely people are to help a person in distress.&amp;quot; however I wholeheartedly agree with the overall message of your post.  Recently I spoke to a group of high-school marketing educators about the current state of social media marketing. I learned from the teachers that their students have no problem using &amp;quot;social media&amp;quot; (they actually teach the teachers) but instead they need training on marketing principles and &amp;quot;real-world&amp;quot; social interaction.  Keep fighting the good fight, and I hope others are keeping an eye out for the negative effects of our children&amp;#039;s digital use...</description>

<description>I think this is a great quote Dave, thanks for sharing.  To some extent I think you can have your cake and eat it to. For example if you create content that is easily sharable, or provides your audience with a reason they would want to share it can have a bit of &amp;quot;viral&amp;quot; built in.  Sure there is the shallow, black swan viral hits like &amp;quot;the bed intruder song&amp;quot;, but hopefully brands understand the difference between &amp;quot;viral comedy&amp;quot; and authentically remarkable content. </description>
