Yeah, the moment Tyreese showed up I knew Oscar was toast. Just like T-Dog, he died saving somebody else. I fear Sasha won't last long either since Michonne is around. Andrea can go away now. Her slow realization of the Governor's true nature is boring. I get it, she will always choose (at least initially) the handsome, arrogant, Alpha White Male with a hint of evil over people who actually have her back.

Guilt at having contributed to oppression is worse than actually being oppressed. Won't someone think of the oppressor's feelings?!! Waah, waah, waah! This would be a great parody but I'm fear this is a sincere effort.

http://fangsforthefantasy.blogspot.com/ : True Blood Season Five Episode Ten: Gone, Gone, Gone

As touching as Jessica's farewell was to Hoyt, I was not very moved by that scene. They have made Hoyt's character so pathetic and unlikable that I just wanted to roll my eyes hard at his demand that Jessica glamor him. Good riddance, indeed. I loved Tara killing the new sheriff. It's about time they had her do something badass as a vamp and it was in her own self interest not just her playing super strong Black woman savior to a White character. I loved that we got to see Russell Edgington's true self, accent change and all. I do believe he'd be more powerful than Salome since she should be about 2000 years old and he 3000 years. However, this show seems to play fast and loose with that age/strength rule depending on the character. I agree that there has to be something in Lilith's blood that is causing the hallucinations and conversions. I am sorry to see Molly go, she was a fun character.

The scenes between Pam and Tara just further show how the writers do not really understand racism even though they try to present vampires and other supernaturals as marginalized groups. Even when they try to be all "racism is bad mmkay" they get it all wrong. It's pretty gross how they keep bringing up slavery jokes/metaphors/imagery around Tara, seemingly for funsies.

I also didn't like that she used the STD=dirty comparison. It doesn't just slut shame people with STDs but it contributes to stigma which gets in the way of prevention and treatment efforts.

Good episode. Been there with the having to explain why your hair looks different, the dealing with the shock that I don't wash my hair every day and the hair touching. My skin crawled when the white co-worker was feeling up her hair.

http://fangsforthefantasy.blogspot.com/ : True Blood Season Five, Episode Seven: In the Beginning

Although there were some bright spots (Bill getting a piggyback ride from Eric), I felt the episode was full of fail and left me disturbed by the end. The crack about suicide being for Muslims, Tara on a stripper pole at the command of her White maker, Jesus's grandfather using a homophobic slur in Spanish were all pretty bad and not exactly unexpected from this show. I feel some kind of way about how they are using a White male (Sam) as the mouthpiece for what it's like to be attacked for who you are while having visible minorities in the hate group whose leader is "Dragon". That's a bit too close to "Grand Dragon" for me. Then during the massacre in the karaoke bar you clearly see one of the vampires feeding on a woman between her legs as though there is a simultaneous sexual assault happening to her. I've seen it argued that he was feeding off the femoral artery in her thigh but that scene was not shot in a way to make that clear. I think they definitely wanted to invoke sexual imagery there and it felt like the viewer was supposed to be somewhat titillated by it. I just felt repulsed. On top of that, I really didn't need to see that they also fed on a little boy that was there. Aside from that, Sookie is one stupid.... Her fairy powers have saved her butt more than once so they might have some value, ya know. Plus she tries to rid herself of them in the silliest way possible, i.e. shooting light up into the night sky. That's a surefire way to not call attention to yourself :-/.

Womanist Musings : 10 Conversations On Racism I’m Sick Of Having With White People

The one I hate having is the, "I totally understand your experience of racism because I was teased as a kid for wearing glasses/having braces/being smart, etc." A variation of the above conversation is the "Well something similar happened to me once so your experience couldn't possibly be due to racism." And the good old "everything but racism" conversation such as "Are you the store security was really following you? Maybe they were shopping too." Or "Sure you drove into a neighborhood with freely flown Confederate flags on the houses but the residents could've been staring at you because they didn't recognize you."

Womanist Musings : Restaurant Makeover and the Colonization of Cultures of Colour

Yup, Food Network is guilty of this quite a bit. I remember there was a show from some years ago called "Food 911" where ordinary people would request help learning to make a dish and the host would come to their homes and teach them how to cook the requested dish. On one particular episode a woman requested to learn how to make a few specific dishes from my West Indian home country. Now this woman is a White American who spent about a year working in my home country and then returned to the US. Somehow she never thought to learn how to make these dishes from local people in my home country. She decides to learn from the White American chef host on the show. Predictably, this host knew nothing about how to make these dishes and decided to put his own spin or substitutions in. One dish he made, he just substituted a cooking technique from another island that we don't really use on my home island. The most egregious act, however, was when he took our national dish and made it unrecognizable. I was so appalled I wrote to the Food Network about it. If you look up the dish on the Food Network site you'll still see the comments that many from my home island made regarding how awful that episode was.

I grew up in a country where tourism is the main industry. I don't usually like talking to people about their travel to my home country because they tend to view the place more as their personal playground rather than a place where actual people live and work and have concerns beyond what umbrella drink to serve tourists at the pool.

I also want to say how glad I am that there's a site like this one looking at these shows through a social justice lens. At least here, Darryl's misogyny and racism won't be excused away simply because he's grieving for Sophia. And it won't be missed that post-apocalyptic leadership tends to be automatically conferred upon straight, white, able-bodied males.

Spot on! I see no reason for Glenn to feel conflicted about taking a moment to think of himself for a change. No one else has considered his feelings or safety when asking/expecting him to do dangerous things for them personally or for the group. They take him for granted. Since it doesn't seem like Shane will be dead anytime soon, I really wish Lori would tell him to stfu. Seriously, he tried to rape her and she's only now considering him a threat? He does not love her. He loves the idea of possessing her. He loves being the alpha male in charge. He's so insecure that he can't stand being in the background. Notice that while Rick and Hershel were gone, he seated himself at the head of the dinner table. And I don't think it was an accident that he revealed Lori's pregnancy to the group. I saw that as another way for him to assert power over her.

http://fangsforthefantasy.blogspot.com/ : Snark theatre: Laurell K Hamilton\'s Narcissus in Chains

Ah, the ardeur, the main reason I have stopped reading Anita Blake novels even though the series started off so strong. Once upon a time, Anita would actually solve crimes and take out big bads. Now, she can scarcely be bothered to disengage her genitals from others. One of the last books I read was about 95% Anita dealing with the ardeur and navelgazing about the meaning of the ardeur. The rest had to do with the actual crime she was supposed to be solving. Even though the Meredith Gentry series is not very well written or engaging, at least it has never pretended to be anything other than paranormal erotica.

Please, please, please let Shane be eaten by the end of the season! Seriously, if this latest stunt of his doesn't demonstrate to the group how cruel, selfish and power-hungry he is, then I don't know what will. Yes, Hershel was being irresponsible with keeping the walkers in the barn and needed a reality check, but damn, Shane not only broke the man but he also put the entire group at risk. Whatever chance they had at being able to negotiate a longer stay at the farm is now kaput and their supply of bullets has got to be dwindling. Why they haven't been honing their skills with melee weapons, I don't know. On another note, how did Sophia get into the barn? Did Hershel and his people find her as a walker and put her in there? If so, didn't they consider she might be the missing girl? Or, did she wander in there to hide one night and end up being bitten by the walkers? Either way, Hershel's choice to keep the barn secret already has serious repercussions.
