I had the same experience as you. Even though Buffy (as a character) is more or less the same age as me, and we graduated high school around the same time, I didn't start watching the show until a bit after it had ended. I was the same age as Buffy in S7, out of college, unemployed, really depressed. 5-6-7 is what resonated for me, not the earlier stuff. And 6, well... I mean. Spuffy.

Historically, a lot of my sexual relationships that were the hottest were ALSO the most fucked-up for me, and I've sort of repeatedly rewatched S6 over and over again because I feel like I've occupied both the Buffy and Spike positions, and it really helps me think through things.
