Ten Years of Medicine and the Arts, edited by Lisa R. Dittrich

It is not a medical narrative, but I thought of you while flipping through a book at my parents' house. My father has a Arts and Medicine book. It's a collection of essays printed in a medical journal over a span of several years relating art (mostly books, few paintings) and how it influenced the author's idea of medicine in some way.

I am reading a hilariously terrible travel guide called Culture Shock! A Survival Guide to Customs and Etiquette: Hungary by Zsuzsanna Ardo. Now I wish I had written down the best lines, but here are a few I read last night. "One explanation you may be offered to account for Hungary's respectable place in the international league table of suicides is a nebulous reference to work." and "You will know your lover is the real McCoy, a Hungarian on heat, when humongous bunches of exquisite flora or other surprises hit you at all times and places." Although I do like her (for once) succinct line "Hungary is the belly button of Europe. So there you have it." If only she'd tell me what to pack for lint protection.

Dan, I enjoyed this post very much. Carissa's example reminded me very much of a story I posted on my blog in honor of Autism Awareness Day. There is a beautiful metaphor of planning a trip to Italy only to suddenly find yourself in Holland and learning to love what Holland has to offer. I drew a picture of blue tulips to honor the day. As I read about Carissa I couldn't help but think about the beautiful, radiant tulip that would represent her. Thanks for sharing her joy and love.

Great post. I love your Top Ten Tuesday. Funny thing--I just read Animal Dreams and I totally agree about the cover. I hate to say it, but if it had been any other author, I probably wouldn't have checked it out. Hey....ART IDEA! Redesign a book cover! Awesome! Thanks :0)
