Last year I brought my kids to my parents for 3-4 days. We live 3 hours away from them, but it was so worth the drive to have that uninterrupted time to think and plan. I also let my husband know we were having ultra simple dinners (bagels with melted cheese, that sort of thing) while the kids were away so that I could focus all my free time on school prep! I didn't get all my planning done, but it was a really good start. So I would definitely encourage to make use of your parents and/or VBS if possible!

I had my fourth child earlier this year, and since then have often shared your thought of how homeschooling is like having your first baby. It's so true, isn't it? Everything is unfamiliar! Everything is new! Everything is such a big deal! There are so many decisions to be made about how things will be done! I kind of chuckle to myself every time I hear someone describe Year 1 as "easy" and "gentle." It's true, but it doesn't feel that easy when you're doing it for the first time and second-guessing every decision you make!

BTW, I really like your idea for nature study. I think I'll try something similar for this coming winter, as nature study was one area in which I fell short a lot last year too.

I just finished reading through The Map-Maker recently, and I loved it! What a fascinating story. The little tidbit about David Thompson's wife delivering her fourth child on the canoe ride from Lake Superior to the Rocky Mountains was quite something! I started reading The First Canadian, but am not liking it nearly so much - it could have been written much better.

Not sure if you're still looking for stories, but Little Songster has a youtube collection of French stories read aloud by a French speaker - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLpqLpg4Yfz... :)

I loved reading this post! My son is in Year 1 and it has been delightful so far, but I'm looking ahead to years when the readings are more challenging. :)

Oh, you've read some great books this month! I loved I Capture the Castle, too, and Persuasion (it's actually one of my favourite Jane Austen novels). And I appreciate the warning about E&P. :)
