The Toast has gotten me through a sudden move to a strange place, buying a house, selling a house, and getting ready to move again. Through my dad's diagnosis with terminal cancer. Through beginning to write publicly. Through loneliness and friend problems. Most importantly, it has been a place where I always felt like "hey, my people"when I didn't have that in real life where I lived. So important. So crucial. What a wonderful way for me to feel like I am not the weird one out and there are tons of people like me.

The Toast : Hey Ladies: Take it to Slack

This is it. This is the nadir. Nothing else can surpass this for horror. (Also strangely meta!) Nothing more awful can exist in this world. Also I need to point out that she is not even quoting Taylor correct, it should be "handsome as hell" and not "handsome like hell." #freegracie

That piece on the Green Book was devastatingly good. What am I going to do without the Toast? Nowhere else will we able to discuss pieces like that without the comment section devolving into racist blithering in about 3 comments.

YES. A suspension at minimum qnd pretty serious chat about What The Workforce Needs, like "reporting of danger" and less "not wanting to hurt feelings."

Nope. It doesn't need to be directly related to your job to be worthy of firing. If someone set their desk on fire it may not be directly related to their job but it's sure as hell fire-worthy! Absolutely fire her! People can be seriously hurt or DIE thanks to that stunt. Employee endangerment is no joke.

God, this is ducking spectacular and completely accurate. So much sparkle eyeshadow. So much black eyeliner alllllll around my eyes. I would touch it up at lunch. I had glitter lipstick. Why did it exist? Why did I pair it with (hold on) lime green metallic glitter eyeshadow AND black eyeliner?????

Oh yes, I thought the same thing. I've read all four of her books and while they're all good, nothing can touch ATGIB. Joy in the Morning is such a funny portrait of such an absurdly specific time and place with such fascinating little details--I still want a dog named Jello!

My favourite books of all time are A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Anne of Green Gables. Both of them I can reread endlessly and always find something new and deeply moving. Especially ATGIB--every time I read it I cry at how simple and heartbreaking and wonderful it is. It's such a specific but wonderfully evocative portrait of a family and a time that you can smell the sidewalk and you feel the heat. And it's as much a story about mothers and daughters and Katie as it is about Francie--and families and addiction and struggle and beauty and the mystery of the world. God, I love it. I love it.
