I think CNN needs to take a close look at White America. They are long overdue for a "White In America" special.

Womanist Musings : Stop Trying to Figure Out Why I am Gay.

You better go off! I never liked the question, although I don't mind answering. I have a unique ability to render even the most ignorant question harmless by my clever responses, but honestly I am so sick of this hetero as the default crap. Its A sexual orientation not THEE sexual orientation.

So many powerful quotes, and I truly appreciate men like Martin Luther King Jr for providing a template of what critical consciousness looks like. He was not perfect, but he was always striving towards greater understanding and greater love.

I'm torn on the subject matter, but glad to know that a black woman is helming a film that is getting notoriety. We need more women behind the scenes in film, and I am glad that Terry Gross is opening that door.

Ms Magazine Blog : Where Are All The Atheist Women? Right Here

I'm a secular humanist but I support atheists. I'm just a little more upfront with the fact that I don't believe in supernatural beliefs. That being said, I know way too many women who have leadership positions in the atheist movement, so this notion that women aren't atheists strikes me as odd. Melody Hensly is just one of the women doing great work in the atheist community that I am aware of. Great post!

Ms Magazine Blog : The Good News: Madea’s Not a Colored Girl

Thoroughly enjoyed this review and I appreciate the critical analysis as opposed to "I hate Tyler Perry." This is the first review that has truly spoken to me the hesitation black women have with the work being appropriated and your attention to detail in terms of dedication to the narrative really resonated with me. Also, as a black gay man and feminist I was moved by your concern for the way Perry chose to present black gay male sexuality. Thank you for this moving review that has the ability to reach and start a dialog on the film. ♥

Ms Magazine Blog : Where Do We Go From bell?

Facebook, Twitter, and Black Gay Chat are where three spaces where I have taken my feminist message too and have seen how people from all walks of life have learned to appreciate feminism and articulate the struggle, success, pain, and pride that they face in their lives. We must not underestimate the power of social networking. In once status update I can share bell hooks, shirley chisholm, and anna julia cooper with thousands of people who would not otherwise have had access to their knowledge. <3

I say all the time that patriarchal masculinity is all fun and games until someone gets murdered. We embrace it when it benefits us but not realizing it's consequences we throw our hands in the air when it becomes the source of our destruction. We must simply demand a way other than patriarchal masculinity.

I will graduate from college this december and become a high school history teacher. I have already created lesson plans incorporating bell hooks and feminist thought into the lesson. I am gonna have my classroom immersed in quotations from famous wise loving people who were loving and compassionate and cared for interbeing.

Ms Magazine Blog : All About Love

Reading bell hooks The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity, and Love was the first time I found a feminist work that really spoke to ME. That showed me that it was possible for ME to articulate my struggle and what I fight for. I think many of us have been conditioned to see love as something that we deserve and that something we should expect to come as a sort of damaged good. The notion that men feel entitled to love but not to give it resonated with me in this piece. "Unconditional love is admirable. But settling for love that is not mutual is dangerous." - Ebony Utley Is so true. While its good to love unconditionally it is foolish to not demand mutuality.

Womanist Musings : Shut Up Sandra Rose, Men Loving Men is Beautiful

"There is a lot of resentment about Black men living on the down low (read: in the closet), but perhaps if they did not face such rampant homophobia simply for living, this phenomenon would not exist." There is no "perhaps" in it. Its the truth that people hide in closets because of the fear and rejection of an intolerant family and or society. As far as the HIV/AIDS thing goes. If people want to pretend that a gay boogeyman is going around infecting people with HIV hey let em do it. They will quickly find out that ignorance is not bliss when it comes to that virus. And heterosexual black women being the fastest growing infection group belies that point. Most heterosexual women are single and get HIV from a heterosexual male partner who has multiple sex partners, NOT A GAY MAN. But hey I guess its too much to you know use a condom and take responsibility for your sex life, much rather blame the gay boogeyman.

Writing While Black : Not All Mothers are Worthy of Praise

Maternal sadism is a live and well and unfortunately because our patriarchal society wants us to believe that all women are nurturing, caring, and loving, more and more cases like this go under the rug. Trust men carrying a fetus in your stomach does not a great parent one make. Our men are just as capable of being great loving, nurturing, and caring parents but patriarchy frowns upon that. I have known way too many children with mothers like the one you describe. Sure they never wanted for food or shelter but the emotional connection that children crave from their parents was never offered. They functioned as the whipping post for their mothers frustrations with the world. I suppose we do our own self a disservice when we are surprised by this. We live in a society where only fathers are thought to be aloof and distant, where only fathers can be detached and disconnected but that can and does happen with many women as well. Being a woman does not automatically make you anymore nurturing than any other human on the planet.
