Pajamas and Coffee : A Sticky Situation Threatens National Security

My sympathies. The only problem we ever had was when dd was smaller and didn't like going through the metal detector alone. Thank goodness it only happened here in Canada where the TSA are more friendly. The ones in the US look like they live for the opportunity to humiliate people.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Ashtanga vs. Bikram yoga: Which is Elitist?

Ashtanga is perfectly fine for anyone as long as the teacher understands how to modify and stresses that students listen to their bodies. I've taught the standing and seated series to kids as young as 9 and women as old as 75. We modified and they were fine. The real issue is the whole "purity" thing. If something has to be modified people are horrified. But is it yoga to force the body or to listen and work with it? I prefer Ashtanga and variations on it to anything hot. I get warm enough on my own. But if you prefer hot, so what. You are listening to what your body needs. This territorial sniping is not necessary, imo. As a teacher, you should guide ppl to where they need to be.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Nepal: 3 Year Old Child Determined to be Real Life Goddess

The whole goddess thing is offensive but not that much different from the way our culture sets up young girls as beauty icons for grown women to aspire to. It seems the patriarchy is cool with female as long as it's not doing anything female - like maturing any way.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Child Abuse?

I wish I could be surprised, but I was a public school teacher for 20 years. If I learned anything, it was that not everyone was meant to be a parent. In fact, a lot of people would be doing the world a favor by never having kids. Unfortunately, most people don't stop and really consider their fitness and personal affinity for the job - because it is a job.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Miscarriage Sucks.

Listen. Just listen. Most grieving people just want to be heard and their loss acknowledged, and realize that often they will recount the same event with the same details over and over. It's called "processing" and it makes everything real because loss sometimes feels like a really bad dream. Most crucial thing in listening is to not give the impression that you would run off if you had the chance and don't turn the conversation back to you - even if you had a miscarriage yourself. The moment is about her (or him - fathers grieve too).

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Become an Elephant Yoga Blogger Right Here Right Now.

If You Ever Had Enough What I have now, probably for the first time ever in my life, is enough. I am not complacent about it. I recognize that relationships are active and therefore require tending. I know that nothing about the strata of society I occupy is immune to disaster. But in societal terms I have come to recognize as my norm, what I have is plenty. There isn’t a single thing or experience I lack. My emotional well brims and is replenished continually. Perhaps this is what has been nagging at me of late. My conscious mind – conditioned as it has been by years of North America consumer driven life-style and middle-class faux career ambition – feels I am not working hard enough to be … what? I don’t know. My inner-self has been quite weepy about it in a pushed around little girl sort of way. She knows we have enough. Time to acknowledge it and let a few things go. I have dreams. Modest and unassuming. But they are not deal-breakers for me and really never were. I have enough. It’s almost verboten to say that out loud as many people fear it invites the active mocking of the fates. That’s flatly ridiculous. Nothing is permanent and fate has nothing to do with that anyway. If you ever had enough, could you recognize it? A fair question.

I think we take trust so much for granted that time and effort required to rebuild it can cause as many doubts as the broken trust. How much time you need is how much time you need and if he loves you, he will suck it up and do what is necessary. Don't be so hard on yourself.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : To the Stranger Who Left the "You A**hole" Note on my Windshield.

It would have been okay but for the snarky paragraph about him being a man in a bad relationship. That was gratuitous. I actually look for another parking spot rather than do the shoe-horn and inconvenience others. It's not okay to block people in. Shows a lack of respect for their space and their time, as you noted.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : What does a yoga body look like? {Adult}

I always thought the point was not confusing your "self" with your "body". The body is temporary while the self is eternal and the actual point of anything we do on this path they call enlightenment. The body is important b/c it houses us and maintaining our dwellings is a good idea. But it's not permanent which gets us back to non-attachment, which in my mind means being prepared for letting go of it (or other people's physical forms) when the time comes - as it will for everyone.

elephant journal: Yoga, Sustainability, Politics, Spirituality. : Are you a Naked Person?

I am a naked person, I guess. Nudity within my home and with my husband has never been an issue, and I am puzzled by women who freak out about nudity in a locker/change room. But I am still reserved around people I don't know and being touched at all by someone I don't know or know just a little is not okay with me. Even people who stand too close in a check out line feels a bit invasive. Perhaps I am not naked enough, but there are some situations that call for clothing and space bubbles, imo.
