"Heart of Darkness" is one of the darkest, disturbing, deepest pieces of literature I've ever read, and Kurtz a very complex character. To use the Vietnam War instead of the Congo as a backdrop of AN was an ingenious move. But to think of this film as about the Vietnam War is misguiding. By reading the history of the Congo Free State gives one more appreciation of the message Conrad and Coppola are sending in these masterpieces.
