I AM YOUNG DETROIT™ | Detroit's Hope & Future | Not just a blog, it's a movement! : What do you think: Is Detroit the New New York?

yes! i LOVE new york, but just coming off a recent visit - my gut reaction is that new york is a place people move to feel cool, but detroit is a place people go to create and be innovative and actually change a part of the world. pretty powerful stuff.

Well-Heeled, With a Mission : Why We Are So Bad at Buying Happiness

I think I used to try to buy happiness much more than I do now. As I get older, my happiness comes from my ability to save money rather than spend it.

20s Money : Monthly Blog Update - July 2010

I'd be interested to see how you're generating your "other advertising" revenue. How have you established relationships with these other advertisers? Have you sought them out, or have they come to you? What advice would you give to a novice blogger looking to break into generating advertising revenue. Sorry if I've missed that somewhere along the line, I've only been following your blog for a few months. Keep up the great work & thanks again for being so transparent with your data!!

20s Money : August: Radical Saving Experiment

I need to do this! Maybe I'll do the same thing this month. We just went on a vacation & everything always seems so scattered afterwards. We need something to kick start our budgeting/saving - this sounds like just the thing!

Well-Heeled, With a Mission : Buy New Car vs. Keep Old Car

I am all about keeping cars as long as possible. We don't have a car payment right now and I'm hoping we can stay that way for a long, long time. However, cars die. And 230,000 is a pretty good life for a car. I'd say it sounds like buying another car would be a reasonable thing to do. However, I would not buy a brand new car. Buy a newish used car. You'll pay less than buying it right off the lot.

My husband and I combined our money very quickly after moving in together, and it's worked out for us so far :) Wisebread.com posted an article today about splitting food costs - I thought it was an interesting approach: http://www.wisebread.com/how-to-split-food-expens...

Well-Heeled, With a Mission : Should I max out my 401K?

i think you're doing the right thing by looking at all the possibilites. i'd do it if i could do it REASONABLY. if you're going to be scraping by each week and it's REALLY going to hurt, i wouldn't max it. but if it's only going to hurt a little - go for it!

Well-Heeled, With a Mission : Sushi: An Expensive Culinary Habit

um - i love sushi. if i could eat it every day i probably would. i actually prefer the more authentic, mom & pop shops over the Americanized "fancy" sushi. There's a GREAT sushi bar/japaneese grocery store in the Detroit area called Noble Fish. The sushi is beyond reasonably priced and is better than any of the "fancy" places, hands down. I have a standard order (its kind of a lot, but i LOVE sushi!) - spicy scallop roll (special, write-in request), tuna teryaki roll (tuna marinated in teryaki - maybe cooked), eel & avocado roll, and usually 3 pieces of nigiri :) NOW I'M HUNGRY!

20s Money : As Print Media Dies, Politicians Continue To Attempt A Save

Wow. Taxing sites to save print seems like the worst idea ever. It's one of those things that is such a bad idea that you think, "There's no way this is ever going to happen...right?" - and then it happens. I like Cuban's idea - people need to embrace change if they want to move forward, not resist it. On the other hand, if newspapers become a thing of the past - what will we wrap our dishes in when we move?

Well-Heeled, With a Mission : Question From a Reader: Where and When to go to Graduate School?

talk to people in the field/positions you want to be in and ask for their advice. They can best tell you whether or not your decision will make sense as a long-term career move. continuing your education is great, but i wouldn't do it unless you can prove that you'll be able to get a better job that not only pays more but that will make you happy & improve your quality of life, which in the end, is most important.

Well-Heeled, With a Mission : Question From a Reader: Where and When to go to Graduate School?

my advice would be to really look at the field you want to go into. find out how many jobs are realistically available, how much post-graduate experience you will need to obtain these jobs (a graduate degree does not always equal jobs), where these jobs are located (and if you're willing to relocate if necessary) and finally how much these jobs pay and how long it will take you to pay off your newly acquired debt. also, find out what kind of weight these certification programs carry - will these certifications (or online schools) REALLY get you the job you're looking for? I've found that a lot of people tend to think that they will, or are being sold that this is what they need, but in reality - these certs are nothing more than another piece of paper & another dollar spent.
Well-Heeled, With a Mission : 5 Little Habits Now That Can Save You Big Money Later

Great list! I really love posts like this that highlight "unconventional" ways to think about saving money. Totally agree with Lindsey's comment as well - cooking at home as much as possible can save you tons & keep you healthy (thus potentially saving you medical expenses down the road). Another thing I would add is to maintain your investments. My husband & I bought our first house a little over a year ago and keeping up on all the little things has definitely been more important to us now that we're no longer renting. The same goes for car maintenance. I have a 2005 Jetta TDI - which is a diesel. I plan to drive that thing for 300,000+ miles in order to avoid a new car payment. The key to the longevity of that investment is maintenance!

whooo! i have not seen this blog but it is just what i need - my job allows us to dress casual, which is great - except i find myself slumming from time to time :) today i wore my converse tennis shoes to work because I just wanted to be comfortable and a coworker said i looked like i was in high school :( any feedback on being comfortable, yet professional & how to dress up casual gear like jeans would be great! and maybe a top 10 comfortable shoe choices would be great! i just checked out her blog and saw the sandal she reccommended last week and i'm pretty sure im buying it...like right now :)
