Moist's comment about not wanting the penny stamp to cost anything like a penny to make is probably a reference to the fact that pennies in fact cost a lot MORE than a penny to make these days. I'm not sure when that started being true, but I'd lay odds it was before this was written.

I see you brought up Freidegger. The other philosopher mentioned by Vetinari, with his "Thoughts" HAS to be someone French based on the name Bouffant. It took me ten minutes to figure it out. My first thought was Rousseau then Descartes, but neither made any sense. I went and looked up a list of French philosophers and was scrolling through and actually face-palmed when I saw Blaise Pascal. Of course! One of his works is even called "Pensées" (Thoughts). He's much better known as a mathematician than philosopher which is why I didn't think of him at first. Here's Britannica on Pascal: https://www.britannica.com/biography/Blaise-Pasca...
To be fair to myself, my study of philosophy is more as a historian and also over a decade old, and at this point most of what I remember can be summed up by that one Monty Python song. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9SqQNgDrgg

Compared to a lot of other Pratchett covers here, I liked it.
