I'm sorry you had to grow up in that situation. It may seem like ultra-clean surroundings are better, but being overly minimal does hurt kids too. My mother is strictly opposed to clutter, even average accumulation of good things. To this day I mourn the special things my mom threw away. She even got rid of years of old photos and memories. It's made me... not exactly a hoarder... but kind of a slave to keeping the kids' things and family keepsakes tidy and organized. Finding balance is so difficult.

So sorry to hear about your health struggles. I had no idea you've been through all of that. God bless you for continuing to keep a faithful outlook.
This was encouraging to me: "...be happy and enjoy every day. Love your children, grandchildren, parents, friends, and neighbors." Because basically it does all come down to love, and living in the moment we have in front of us. Grace will come in the hard times if necessary (for example like it did for the ten Boom sisters during their time in concentration camps. i used to get terrified about bad things happening and difficult times, but Corrie ten Boom's books are so encouraging because she lived through it with a good testimony, and we don't have to live in fear.)
These websites are very helpful in preparing for anything, even just basic natural disasters that we all go through due to weather. (i love the Preparedness Mama site, her tagline is "Taking the Scared out of Being Prepared") :D
preparednessmama.com/self-reliance-skills/
and beprepared.com/insight
(this is the Emergency Essentials site)

Thank you for this post. I love this part, "I was listening to a woman teacher yesterday. She said that if you have a rebellious 15 year old son... fix him his favorite meal, smile at him, speak warmly to him, win him with love."
Kevin Leman wrote a book called 7 Things He'll Never Tell You But You Need to Know and one of them is "Think of Me as a 4 year-old Who Shaves" Funny but so true. Men do appreciate being babied sometimes. I know if i were doing things i shouldn't i'd change much faster if my husband kept respecting me anyway and loving me in spite of myself. Thank you for the post.

Old Navy has some nice basic skirts for a decent price. The jersey ones are super comfortable. Skirts aren't terribly heard to sew, and Walmart usually has some jersey fabric on clearance. I hate wearing skirts because I don't like the feeling of bare thighs (lol) but wearing a spanx type undergarment or bike shorts underneath that can help make skirts more comfortable.

My hubby and I were financially struggling when our kids were little and we had to use WIC . (The USDA program that gives parents free milk, cheese, oatmeal, jars of baby food green beans, chicken, peaches, etc.) It was the only option for us at the time, fresh fruit and veggies were out of our price range. If you've ever tasted baby food, oh my gosh ew lol BUT now they will eat tuna and other healthy proteins, and they love their veggies. They also don't really like candy. And this wasn't intentional, it just happened because of what they had to eat from necessity. All that to say, if you start kids on something as babies they will stick with it later.

Haha! From the site: "Did you grow up throwing spaghetti against a wall to check if it was done? Were most of your meals served in a single dish? Was JELL-O considered a vegetable? If “yes,” welcome to the club." So funny :D

Thank you for sharing that! Wow, your mom is such an encouraging example. They say if you want something done, ask a busy woman. That's true for me. The more I have to accomplish the easier it is to streamline and get a schedule going that covers the important things.
