Thanks Sarah and EngFacts for your comments. Sarah, besides boosting your confidence, did having a better elevator speech at the Fair get you interviews?

I think GPA is always going to be important as a screening tool at Career Fairs. Knowing someone or getting connected through networking can help get you past that initial screen of GPA.

Excellent post! I will be covering the concept of lifelong learning in the December CEP Career Corner column. I've interviewed engineers, HR folks and engineering consultants. One thing was very clear was how serious they all are about the value of lifelong learning for themselves and their companies. The column will cover some of the ways they're making lifelong learning happen.

Thanks everyone, for your comments. I think you raise some excellent points about learning being a ongoing endeavor. I'm also a big believer in teaching as a way to learn more. I know I have to really brush up on a topic if I have to stand up in front of an audience (or present a webinar) and sound like I know what I'm talking about! Great idea also to become known as the Technical Resource - you become like a central clearinghouse for all information related to a certain topic.

Thanks to everyone for sharing which tools you use. I can appreciate Robert S's comments about the challenges in using these tools. One thing that is becoming clear to me is that not every project is suitable for online collaboration. And that online collaboration can require a different way of working than what we may be used to.

Three cheers to ehorahan for mentioning the good old telephone! I think it can add the third dimension - that of relationship building - back to online collaboration.
