Why do you write "marriage" in quotes when referring to same-sex marriage? Interesting ethos. And by "interesting" I mean clearly biased.
My favorite books and favorite banned books happen to be the same (sadly?): The Perks of Being a Wallflower; The Catcher in the Rye; and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Thanks for the very generous giveaway! :)
My favorite books, in general, and my favorite banned books are the same: The Catcher in the Rye; Adventures of Huckleberry Finn; and The Perks of Being a Wallflower. :)
I keep hearing about this book - thanks for the shot at winning a copy.
Lol. How did I just see this? Thanks, you two! :P
I also agree that there's nothing wrong or "less than" about genre fiction or any type of reading. There are certainly different things to look for and to be gained from works of "high literature," but as far as merit - the question is really personal, and it's all about motive (what do you want from your reading?). Even within genre fiction, there are types that might be considered literary (some that you mentioned) and others that might be considered general fiction, "low literature", pleasure reading or whatever else. Ultimately, it's all about our own reading experiences, what we love, and what we respond to.
"When I started my blog it was simply because I wanted to write but about what I didn't know." I think a lot of us start there - I know I certainly did! It took a while for me to realize that what I really wanted to blog about was books. And then, to turn that idea into an actual "book blog" took even longer. It remains a work in progress, as it always will! I do still keep a separate blog for my creative writing and other things, but 99% of my blogging time is spent on my book blog.
I'm so happy to see The Yellow Wallpaper popping-up on many posts today. It's an incredible short story! Another of my favorites is "Paul's Case" by Willa Cather (who is one of my favorite novelists, but also an incredible short fiction writer).
Your list is fantastic! I'm seeing so many good ones this time! Not that the last Spin was bad (although, the book that came up for me was Rebecca and I didn't read it). Jane Eyre, Northanger Abbey, Agnes Grey, As You Like It, The Tempest, and David Copperfield are all fantastic pieces. I liked The Canterbury Tales, but I read it untranslated so it was a bit tough. I see a lot of Austen on your list, which is great - she's incredible. You should join us for Austen in August this year! Good luck with the Spin - hope you get the one you're secretly hoping for!
Can't believe how many Persuasion readers are out there, today! I wonder if there's a read-along for it taking place somewhere?? I've read most of Austen's works, but I'm holding off on Persuasion and Emma, the final two, until my Austen in August event later this year.
Good luck to you with the 'thon and your reading goals! I'm half-way done with my 2nd book. Should be able to finish before the night is through. :)
