Whenever you took him out to walk and “do his business”, he always stops and listens. I don’t know what he’s listening to, but it holds his attention. When he’s done, he moves on. He stops and looks at an ant crawling in his path, the people across the street, a leaf that has fallen from a tree after watching its descent. Everything and anything fascinates him and he takes it all in, as if to acknowledge that everything around us is mysterious and marvelous. Through him you learned to slow down, enjoy the walks and take in more, too.
Training doesn’t trump nature. He is housebroken. However, there have been several times when he's gone inside the house always by the front door. You were not be incensed. You realize this: If I’d paid attention to him and the signals he always gives, you'd know when he’s telling you he has to go out. Some things, no matter what we’re trained to do, are in our nature and have to be taken care of even at inopportune times and inopportune places. You had to realize that and once you accepted it you could not scold him, but need to be even more attuned to the signals I’m given that let me know when an act of nature is about to occur, so that I can either prepare for it, or prevent it altogether.
Sometimes we don’t choose who we end up with, and that’s a good thing. I realize he didn’t pick us, I chose him. I’ve no idea whether, if he’d had the choice, he would have chosen us to live with. But that’s the beauty of things. While he had no choice he’s made the most of it. he knew no more about us than we knew about him, but somehow, we make this work. There have been some bumps along the way, some challenges and certainly plenty of good things, but no one foretold the future here. You all had to find your way and find it, together. If we approached our human relationships in the same way, who knows what the possibilities would be? Maybe we should try and find out.
All Roman really needed was to be with you, around you and acknowledged by you. Nothing brought him more peace and comfort than being on Fred's or Johnny's lap or resting, curled into a perfect C-shape, next to your thigh, on the bed. When you moved around the house he was right at your heels, and when you sat down he lied down somewhere close, just because that’s where you were. At first, I wasn’t sure what to think of all this togetherness. But now, I can’t imagine living without him.
You may think you’re responsible for taking care of him, but he really taking care of you he always said. It’s funny that when we get ourselves a “pet” we have the impression that we’re their caretakers. But if anything, especially in the case of a dog, we find that the pet takes care of us. And they do it unconditionally. You all benefited from his innate ability to tap into your emotions and show up just when you needed a little affection or something to distract you when your spending too much time in my head with the doubts that sometime lurk there. Granted, you may feed him, walk him, groom him and take him to the vet. But every day, he valued you. Listened to you although he couldn't engage in conversation and respond. And he gave you the pleasure of his company and the encouragement of his dedication to you' all.
And today when the lights were turned out Roman told the guys down at the animal shelter you' all would be down soon and they need to be on their best behavior..... especially with the human with the camera. :-)
