http://www.portraits-by-nc.com/blog/ : Portrait of Lucy - A Catalan Sheepdog Mix — Orange County Portraits | Family and Pet Portraits

It came out very nice. We are not big fans of dog parks. Too many bad things happen there.

I enjoyed this article and found it very informative. I have had the pleasure to watch Ms. Abbott's flat-coats run hunt tests. They are wonderful dogs.

: Leptospirosis: Do You Vaccinate Your Pup?

Lepto vaccines only last for a year. Sadly some people in our area who thought it lasted longer lost their dogs to it. You should discuss this with your vet to see if your area is at risk. If it is and you think your dog may have a reaction, discuss the risks v. benefits of the vaccine with your vet and if you decide to give it, there are things the vet can do to try to prevent an adverse reaction. My recent post Monday Mischief–Act Preoccupied

Yes we vaccinate against Lepto every year. Dogs have died in our area from it. One of Freighter's litter mates has a bad reaction to the vaccine, (he got it earlier than Freighter due to where he lives and what he would be doing). When we gave Freighter his first shot which contained it, we pretreated him with Benadryl. The second time we did not pre-treat, but he had no reaction. He will continue to get that one every year. Our vet has recently gone to a three-year protocol for all vaccines except lepto and bordetella. I agree with Pamela, if you trust your vet, talk it over with them. Particularly if it is a busy clinic, they can tell you what kinds of cases they have been treating in your area.
: A Destination Wedding in the Bahamas

I went to Freeport for my high school senior class trip. In the dark ages everyone went there. :) I did not care for it. Nor did I care for Nassau the couple times I have been there. But I am in for a good dog story.
: A Trip to the Vet: Reader Input

I don't really know about anti-anxiety medications for dogs, but I do know of competition dogs that have had to be retired due to them not being able ti handle the stress. In that case they could be removed from the thing that was stressing them and digestive issues went away. If life in general causes the stress then maybe medication is the way to go. I also think that researchers believe that stress can be a trigger for bloat (although I am not sure they have been able to determine that for sure). As for not sharing training challenges, imo the best trainers never think they have all of the answers and are always considering different ways and looking at other training methods....always learning. I don't think training a dog is an exact science. My recent post Monday Mischief–Birthday Mischief

: A Trip to the Vet: Part 2

We gave Thunder Reglan after his bloat surgery. We were warned that after that kind of stomach surgery, he might have to be on it for the rest of his life. We were hoping that would not be the case because one of the side effects is that it can bring on seizures in dogs prone to them. We have no idea whether Thunder is prone to seizures, but they are not unheard of in Chessies so if we could do without, best not to. Thunder did have some digestive issues and we were having trouble keeping weight on him, so we added plain yogurt as a pro-biotic and that seemed to do the trick. He gets a gas-x with each meal purely based on him bloating, (Storm too). I have heard of dogs that have bouts of pancreatitis due to stress. It can manifest as stomach/digestive issues. You are right the only way to treat is to avoid stress.

I can totally relate to the pill issue. The brown dawgs will eat most anything we put in their food and I doubt they notice. However the few times that Thunder has been on antibiotics, it has been a struggle to cram them down his throat. He is so big that he gets big pills and can easily eat his food around them. I can understand why you wouldn't want to deal for a supplement.
